Moran to get cold commodities

Moran families certified eligible for monthly commodity distributions should receive cold items beginning this month.

The Moran City Hall is now equipped with a freezer, and according to Melissa Hobbs at the Shackelford County Justice of the Peace office, the county commissioners have approved the additional items.

“They are going to get cold commodities in June,” said Hobbs. “Sometimes it is hamburger meat, sometimes chicken or pork. It depends on what is available at the food bank.”

Albany to host machine pitch tournament

The Albany Little League will once again be hosting one of the Little League District 5 machine pitch tournaments to compete against teams in the Big Country area.

“Sixteen teams will play in Albany on June 8,” said local little league president Paul Hamilton. “If we are the best of four, we will play in the Big Country final four on the following Monday night, June 10.”

The tournament is for teams made up of eight to nine year olds from around the Big Country area and will start at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 8.

10 MHS seniors earn diplomas

Moran Independent School District superintendent Danny Freeman, school board members Sug Roller, Alice Branham, Linda Stockton, and Gary Roan, a representative from Cisco College, and a large audience of family and friends attended the Moran High School commencement last Friday, May 31, at the new MISD event center.

Graduates included valedictorian Curry Pendleton, salutatorian Kaylin New, Colton Box, Jesse Hawley, K.J. Henderson, Emma Hensley, Kobee Lapp, Khloe New, Summer Pederson, and Ethan Smith.

Children invited to Moran VBS

Children from kindergarten to eighth grade are invited to attend Vacation Bible School at the First Baptist Church in Moran next week, according to organizer Jo Hise.

Jesus, food, and games will be provided at the “Into the Wilderness” VBS.

A kickoff for the event will be held on Sunday, June 9, at 6:00 p.m.

Classes will take place from 6:00 until 8:15 p.m. Monday through Thursday, June 10-13.

Students compete at Field Day

The Nancy Smith Elementary School annual field day was held last Monday, May 20 at the high school track. Events included high jump, long jump, softball and football throws, a 400 meter relay, 75, 100, and 200 meter runs, tug-of-war, water slide, water relay, and water kickball.

“We did not have as many running events this year because we needed to have enough time for the splash events also,” said coach Ginger Norton.

Britting named to ASU dean’s list

Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas, is pleased to announce that Levi Britting of Albany, has been named to the Dean’s List for the 2019 spring semester.

To be eligible for the ASU Dean’s List, full-time undergraduate students must maintain at least a 3.25 grade point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale.

Britting, the son of Rod and Susan Britting and Kristi Espinosa, is majoring in biology.

Summer conditioning programs start Monday

Students entering junior high and high school in the fall have the opportunity to keep in shape over the summer thanks to summer conditioning programs for both boys and girls.

Prospective female athletes who want to get in shape or stay in shape will be able to participate in strength, conditioning, and agility workouts starting Monday, June 10 at 8:00 a.m. in the high school weight room, while the boys will start the same Monday, but they will be in the Green Room at 7:00 a.m.

Moran seniors to graduate Friday

Ten Moran seniors will receive high school diplomas at commencement exercises tomorrow evening, while the MISD kindergarten and eighth grade graduation cere-monies will take place tonight.

High school graduation will take place at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, May 31 at the MISD Activity Center (formerly the Moran Methodist Church) which is located on Main Street, across from the Moran Baptist Church.

A reception will follow.

Honor graduates include valedictorian Curry Pendleton and salutatorian Kaylin New.

Taggart sworn in for 2nd term

Steve Taggart was sworn in for his second term as Moran mayor at the regular Moran City Council meeting at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21.

City secretary Jackie Wallace administered the oath of office.

Taggart, who is also the chief of the City of Moran Volunteer Fire Department, added that the VFD recently purchased a new air compressor with donated funds.

Dancers to perform in Emerald City

The Albany Dance Theatre Company will present “The Emerald City“ this Friday, June 1 at 7:00 p.m. in the Albany High School auditorium. 

The performance is free to the public and will include 150 dancers from Albany and five surrounding communities.
