There have been a few major news stories of late regarding significant airplane accidents causing injury and death.  Rarely does an automobile accident make the news but in Texas about one death occurs every 2.5 hours in a vehicular accident.  Overall, about 700 Texans die each day from various causes.  In the vast majority of cases, not one of those folks knew that it would be their last day.  And, many, if not most, will “fly away” without a flight plan!

Yard sale, bake sale fundraiser planned Saturday at Shackelford County Show Barn

Shoppers should have plenty to choose from this Saturday at the special yard sale and bake sale to be held at the Shackelford County Show Barn from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.

“We have so, so many things!” organizer Kristie Smith said earlier this week. “We have donations of big furniture, home furnishing and décor, kitchen items, and children’s items, which includes furniture, games, toys, and clothes. And there’s more being brought in this week. Now we need shoppers!”

Albany FCCLA advances record number to state

A large group of 27 Albany FCCLA members, the most ever, competed at the Regional Leadership Conference last week in Waco, with most of them advancing on to the state meet in Dallas April 11-13.

“I’m very proud of them,” Jennifer Marshall, FCCLA sponsor, said. “For some of them, this was their first time to compete, and the judges were extremely impressed.”

Lady Lions roar to four straight wins

The Albany Lady Lions softball team enjoyed its best week of the season so far, going 4-0, and now looks to keep the momentum going.

Albany (4-1) visited Roby on Tuesday, March 4. Results will be reported next week. At 5:00 p.m. Friday, March 7, Roby visits Albany.

The Lady Lions notched their first win of the season Tuesday, Feb. 25 with a 7-5 victory against Aspermont. Albany then beat Santa Anna, Merkel JV and Eastland JV over the weekend at the Eula tournament.

Lions baseball opens season, hosts home tournament

The Albany Lions baseball team opened its season Thursday, Feb. 27 with two games in the American Cancer Society tournament, but a third contest was cancelled because of player availability.

The Lions (0-1-1) host the Albany Lion Varsity Baseball Tournament this weekend. On Thursday, March 6 (today), Albany plays Cisco at 1:00 p.m. and Eastland at 3:00 p.m. On Friday, March 7, the Lions face Brady at 11:00 a.m. and Early at 3:00 p.m.

Lions place third at home golf invitational

The Albany Lions boys golf teams had a strong showing on their home course last week with the first team finishing third at the Lion Invitational at Albany Golf Course.

Albany golfers spent this week at the Eula tournament, played at Shady Oaks Golf Course. Myleigh Leveridge played in the girls division Monday, March 3 with the boys playing Wednesday, March 6. Results will be reported next week.

Albany track teams open season at Maverick Relays

Albany track and field athletes entered competition Thursday, Feb. 27 at the Eastland Maverick Relays.

Albany, which had its first scheduled meet cancelled because of weather, was competing Thursday, March 6 (today) at the Cross Plains meet.

At Eastland, the varsity boys scored 74 points to finish fourth in the team standings. The Lions won two events and medaled in four others.

Junior high track teams compete at Bronco Relays

After two weather cancellations, the Albany Junior High Cubs and Lady Cubs track teams finally got a taste of competition Tuesday, Feb. 25 at the Bronco Relays in Breckenridge.

The teams returned to action Monday, March 3 at the Cross Plains meet. Results will be reported next week.

The Breckenridge meet was a ribbon meet with runners in each heat receiving a ribbon. Official results and team points were not kept. The main factor was finally facing outside competition.

Albany tennis shines in Abilene

The Albany tennis team took just three entries to the Hawley Invitational on Thursday, Feb. 27, but came home with the top two spots in mixed doubles.

With the entire lineup available Monday, March 3 at the Vernon Invitational, Albany claimed one title and five medals in three draws. Details will be reported next week.

Albany takes next week off for spring break, then returns to action Tuesday, March 18 at the Abilene High tournament.
