Lady Lions dominate Roby, TLCA

The Albany Lady Lions softball team endured another weather cancellation last week, but bounced back with two big wins, the latter against Abilene TLCA in the District 8-2A opener.

The Lady Lions (6-1 overall, 1-0 district) played its second district game Tuesday, March 11 against Hawley in their final game of spring break week. Details will be reported next week. Albany resumes its normal schedule Tuesday, March 18 at Haskell.

The Albany Lions baseball team fashioned an undefeated run last week in the Albany Lion Varsity Baseball Tournament, the host team just didn’t get as many wins as it wanted.

The Lions (2-1-3) did not play this week over spring break. Albany returns to action at 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 18 when it visits Haskell in the District 8-2A opener.

Playing with its full lineup for the first time, the Albany tennis team claimed one title and four other medals Monday, March 3 at the Vernon Invitational.

After taking this week off for spring break, Albany returns to action Tuesday, March 18 at the Abilene High tournament.

Lions take third, Lady Lions earn top finishes at Buffalo Relays

The Albany Lions and Lady Lions track teams made their second outing of the season Thursday, March 6 at the Buffalo Relays at Cross Plains.

The teams will compete Saturday, March 15 at the Buckaroo Relays at Breckenridge.

At Cross Plains, the varsity boys placed third in the team standings with 85 points.

“We saw times come down with almost everybody that ran,” Lions coach Rod Britting said. “There were a few that were higher, but it was a windier meet.”

Britting said windy conditions also hampered field events.

Cubs claim team title at Buffalo Relays

The Albany Junior High eighth grade boys won the team title Monday, March 3 at the Junior High Buffalo Relays at Cross Plains, while both girls teams placed second in the team standing.

After taking a week off for spring break, the teams return Friday, March 21 to host the Albany junior high meet.

At Cross Plains, the eighth grade Cubs scored 136½ points, winning two events and earning 13 medals. Ace Townson won the pole vault and Blake Britting won the 400.

Moran ISD has had a busy stretch before going on spring break.

Students Sam Stanley, Brylee Stautzenberer and Kielar Carr were inducted into the National Honor Society.

“The core values are Academics, Leadership, Service and Character,” Moran Principal Jo Hise said. “They had to exhibit those qualities in order to be nominated and voted upon. I’m very pleased to have them be a part of that organization.”

Albany golf competes at Shady Oaks in Eula tourney

The Albany golf teams got their first look of the year last week at the course that will host district competition with differing levels of success at the Eula tournament at Shady Oaks Golf Course.

Coach Tate Thompson will split his forces next week with Myleigh Leveridge and the second boys team playing Monday, March 17 at the Hawley tournament, while the first boys team plays Wednesday, March 19 at the Jim Ned tourney at Shady Oaks.

Last week marked the official start of the 2025 golf season at Albany Golf Club, as the course hosted its first high school tournaments in nearly a decade, with both boys’ and girls’ teams competing last Monday and Wednesday, respectively.  The official start of the golf season last week brought a renewed energy to the course as members looked ahead to what will be a milestone year—the 100th anniversary of the club.

The Albany Mainstreet Playhouse took center stage this past weekend with their production of Rumors, marking a successful three-day run that brought renewed excitement to Albany’s theater scene. The show, directed by Lorna Ayers, entertained audiences while showcasing the cast’s strong chemistry.

The Lorax, Thing 1, 2 and 3, and Cat in the Hat, among other Dr. Seuss characters were seen on Nancy Smith Elementary School campus on Friday, February 28, to celebrate “Read Across America” week. The annual week-long event is celebrated in schools throughout the nation to coincide with the March 2nd birthday of children’s author Dr. Seuss, whose big day fell on a Sunday this year.
