Albany track teams compete at Buckaroo Relays

Members of the Albany Lions and Lady Lions track and field teams cut their spring break short Saturday, March 15 to compete at the Buckaroo Relays at Breckenridge.

The teams return to action Thursday, March 20 (today) at Haskell. Albany hosts the Roarin’ Lions Relays on Thursday, March 27, the final meet before the District 10-2 meet on Wednesday, April 2 at Cisco.

Albany tennis returns to action after spring break

The Albany tennis program returned to competition following spring break Tuesday, March 18 at the Abilene High tournament.

Results will be reported next week.

Albany’s next outing is Monday, March 24 at Vernon with two more tournaments on the schedule before the District 10-2A tournament on Monday-Tuesday, April 21-22 at Abilene’s Rose Park Tennis Center.

Lady Lions’ game cut short after injury

The Albany Lady Lions softball team was holding its own Tuesday, March 11 in its second District 8-2A outing before a freak accident brought the game to an early end.

Lady Lions pitcher Carisa Barrera was struck in the face by a line drive in the top of the fourth inning. The game was ended at that point with Hawley awarded a 9-6 win.

Lions open district baseball play on the road

After a week off for spring break, the Albany Lions baseball team returned to action this week with the start of District 8-2A play.

The Lions opened the league schedule Tuesday, March 18 at Haskell. Albany will visits Anson at 5:00 p.m. Friday, March 21.

“We’re going to be out on the road Tuesday and Friday,” coach David Fairchild said. “This is where it starts, this short five weeks.”

Leveridge earns top-three finish at Hawley

Albany’s Myleigh Leveridge placed third individually Monday, March 17 at the Hawley tournament, shooting 118 at Hawley Golf Club, while the Lions second boys team made improvement.

The first boys team played Wednesday, March 19 at the Jim Ned tournament at Shady Oaks Golf Course, site of the District 10-2A tournament. Albany will play Monday-Tuesday, March 24-25.  The girls division plays Monday with the boys on Tuesday.

The district tournament is scheduled for Monday, March 31 and Tuesday, April 1.

Beard earns fourth-place finish at Houston

Albany FFA’s Madalein Beard placed fourth over the weekend in the Junior Hereford Heifer at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

The result continues a strong winter show season for Beard, who has placed well at several shows with heifers she exhibited at the Shackelford County Livestock Show.

Several Albany FFA and Shackelford County 4-H members are in Houston this week showing hogs.

Moran FFA members Rayni Vinson and Bradee Stautzenberger continued enjoying success with their cattle at major stock shows.

Stautzenberger placed fourth in a class of 43 with her Beefmaster heifer last week at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and showed a steer Monday, March 17, but it didn’t make the cut. Landon Herrell also showed a heifer at Houston.

Local cowboys win big in Houston

Four Shackelford County cowboys participated on the top two teams Saturday, March 8 at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo’s Youth Ranch Rodeo.

Gatlin Wills and Jack Nail were members of the Creighton Ranch team, which won the event for the second year in a row. Slayton Parsons and Riggyn Saunders were part of the Texas Cattle Exchange team, which claimed the reserve champion title.

Albany Live is bringing another big-name act to town, with the Bellamy Brothers set to perform on March 22 at the Aztec Theater. The concert marks the 18th show in the series, which has become a staple for live music in Albany.

High winds cause outages, early dismissal at schools

With the extreme high winds Albany and the surrounding area received on Tuesday, March 4, the weather proverb “In like a lion and out like a lamb” seems to be true this March.

According to the National Weather Service out of San Angelo, Albany received wind gusts up to 60 mph for the majority of the day on Tuesday. The wind and dirt that came into the area brought power outages for many homes and businesses, Albany ISD being one of them.
