Lions open district baseball play on the road

By Sam Waller

After a week off for spring break, the Albany Lions baseball team returned to action this week with the start of District 8-2A play.

The Lions opened the league schedule Tuesday, March 18 at Haskell. Albany will visits Anson at 5:00 p.m. Friday, March 21.

“We’re going to be out on the road Tuesday and Friday,” coach David Fairchild said. “This is where it starts, this short five weeks.”

Albany is 2-1-3 after winning its last two games. Fairchild said while the varsity has played all but one scheduled game, the cancellation of the Albany JV tournament last month because of weather has put the program behind schedule.

“I wish we’d got some more in just because of the young guys I have on the team this year,” he said. “We need some more innings.”

The situation has left the Lions trying to settle some lineup questions.

“We’re moving people around,” Fairchild said. “We’ve got people with injuries. We’re trying to get some young people in the right places.”
