Lions strengthen playoff hopes with district wins

The Albany Lions varsity boys basketball team improved its chances of earning a playoff berth last week with a pair of wins over District 10-2A opponents.

The Lions (10-6 overall, 5-3 district) continued their push for a postseason spot Tuesday, Jan. 28 with a 55-10 home win against Abilene TLCA. Details will be reported next week.

Lady Lions gaining momentum as season nears end

The Albany Lady Lions basketball team showed significant progress last week with competitive outings against District 10-2A opponents who are battling for playoff berths.

The Lady Lions (4-18 overall. 1-8 district) continued the upward trend Tuesday, Jan. 28 with a 40-16 home victory against Abilene TLCA. Details will be reported next week.

On Friday, Jan. 31, Albany visits district leader Cisco for a 6:15 p.m. start. On Tuesday, Feb. 4, the Lady Lions host Anson to end the season with Senior Night activities planned.

Albany FFA members earn top honors at shows

Two Albany FFA members brought home blue ribbons from major stock shows last week.

Kenzie Neve placed first in her class with a steer and made the sale at the National Western Livestock Show in Denver, Colo., while Jake Hale received a first-place ribbon at the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo ag mechanics contest.

Neve showed her Maine-Anjou cross to the top spot in Class 9 Market Steers. The animal is one of eight Neve has fed this year. Two have been sold at shows, while four more are entered in upcoming major shows.

Record-breaking year for stock show

The 2025 Shackelford County Livestock Show is in the books, wrapping up just in time to beat a change in the weather.

The event, held Thursday-Saturday, Jan. 16-18, drew 128 participants from Albany FFA, Moran FFA and Shackelford County 4-H, down slightly from the past few years.

The Albany Live 2025 concert series continues this week with a highly anticipated performance by Texas music legend Gary P. Nunn. Set for January 25 at the Aztec Theater, the show promises an exciting evening of live music featuring one of the most celebrated names in Texas country.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., with the concert kicking off at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are still available and can be purchased online or at the door. Early arrival is recommended to secure a good seat and enjoy the pre-show atmosphere.

Chest surpasses goal in record-breaking year

There were times when it looked as though the Albany Chest wouldn’t come anywhere close to its 2024 goal, but donations flooded in at the end of the year, surging past the $48,000 goal and reaching what was possibly a record year with $53,310.75 in collections since October.

Chest directors met last week on Wednesday, Jan. 15, and handed out almost $56,000 to 25 applicants, including the Albany Band Boosters, who recently submitted a request for help funding the 2025 spring trip.

No major skirmishes were recorded at the Jan. 20 meeting of the Shackelford County Hospital District’s board of directors, with those present voicing a desire to move forward from the problematic sessions over the last four months.

Council amends 2024 capital budget

Amending the 2024 capital improvement budget took most of a 45-minute Albany city council meeting held on Wednesday, Jan. 15, with city manager Billy Holson going over the capital improvement expenditures for the year in advance of the end of the city’s fiscal year on March 31.

Holson explained that the five-year plan is always adjusted for various reasons, usually depending on unexpected costs and lack of personnel to complete projects.
