Lady Lions begin second round of district

The Albany Lady Lions opened the second round of the District 10-2A girls basketball schedule Tuesday, Jan. 14 with a 56-16 loss at Hawley in their only outing of the week.

After a district bye on Friday, Jan. 17, Albany (4-17 overall, 1-6 district) returned to action Tuesday, Jan. 21 with a 31-27 home loss against Stamford. Details will be reported next week. The Lady Lions visit Haskell at 6:15 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24.

First-year coach Ashlyn Bevel said the goal over the final five games is to make use of the lessons learned the first time through the district schedule.

The Albany Lions continued a rough stretch in the District 10-2A boys basketball schedule Tuesday, Jan. 14 with a 65-48 loss at Hawley.

The Lions (8-6 overall, 3-3 in district) have lost three in a row to fall to fourth in the district standings.

Albany began the second round of the district schedule Tuesday, Jan. 21 with a 45-34 home win against Stamford. Details will be reported next week.

Shackelford County taxes due by January 31

Taxes assessed during 2024 are officially due next week, on Friday, Jan. 31. 

Payments made in person at 132 Hill St. will be accepted through the end of that work day, as will mailed payments postmarked no later than Jan. 31, 2025. 

Online and drop box payments are also options. Online payments will be assessed a convenience fee by the processing company.

Filing opens for local elections

Filing opened last Wednesday, Jan. 15 for the local May 3 elections, with several incumbents and one newcomer signing up as of Tuesday’s press deadline.

Candidates have until Friday, Feb. 14 to file for the local elections, each of which could be cancelled if there are not opposed races.

Vickie Gore Durilla, age 69 and lifetime resident of Albany, passed from this life to her eternal home on Sunday, January 12, 2025. Vickie’s wishes were to be cremated and no service is planned for now. Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to Morehart Mortuary of Albany.

Barbara Jean Hudman, age 88 of Odessa, passed away Tuesday, January 7, 2025. Funeral services were be held at 10am, Saturday, January 11th at First Baptist Church in Albany Texas with her nephew Tom Oliver officiating. Interment followed in the Albany Cemetery under the direction of Morehart Mortuary.
