Noon deadline set Nov. 22 for Thanksgiving

A Monday, Nov. 22 deadline has been set for the Nov. 25 edition of The Albany News due to the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday.

All news articles and advertising, including classified ads, must be received no later than noon on Monday, Nov. 22. 

The usual copy deadline for the weekly paper is Tuesday at 12:00 noon. It is being moved up a full day in order to adjust the printing and mailing schedule.

3 county incumbents begin filing process

Three incumbent county officials filed the paperwork needed to designate a campaign treasurer this week and each are seeking signatures needed to file for the Republican primary election in March.

While no candidate had yet completed the filing process that opened this week, the trio of prospective candidates represent just half of six positions open for the March primary elections for both Republicans and Democrats. The General Election is set for next November.

Aztec musical this Saturday to feature Troubadour tunes

The Aztec Theater will take a break from its renovation project Saturday night so that local performers can host Troubadour – Songs of the Singer-Songwriter.

The program will start at 7:00 p.m. Pam Davis will narrate.

Admission is $15 per person. Tickets will be sold at the door and may be paid with cash or check. Credit cards will not be accepted.

Organizer Sandy Abel said about a dozen local musicians will perform songs from a wide range of genres.

Redistricting moves to next step

There was no public comment at a special hearing last Friday morning, and Shackelford County commissioners moved forward with the process of redistricting the precincts in order to “equalize” populations within the four areas.

Since there was more than a 10% deviation between Pcts. 2 and 4, that’s where most of the changes will occur, with several blocks between Breckenridge St. and East South 1st St. moving from 3 to 1, and a fairly large area around the Albany Golf Course changing from 4 to 2.

TAMMI TAGGART TITSWORTH

Tammi Taggart  Titsworth of Lubbock, age 60, died Nov. 6, 2021 at her home. A memorial service will be held at the Moran Community Center on Nov. 21 at 1:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome to help celebrate the life of Tammi Taggart Titsworth. 

She was born June 23, 1961 in Toronto, Ohio to Harold Wayne Taggart and Gwen Burton-Gates. She married Paul Titsworth June 16, 2002 in Eastland, TX.

She graduated from Moran High School and worked for The Albany News. She also played on The Albany News softball team for several years.

Citizens invited to holiday lunch

The Moran Independent School District will hold its Thanksgiving meal on Thursday, Nov. 18.

The event is open to all community members.

Meals will cost $3.83 for adults and $3.09 for students.

Pre-K and kindergarten students will start lunch at 11:00 a.m. and will eat in their classrooms. First through fifth grades will start lunch at the same time in the cafeteria, followed by junior high (sixth through eighth grades) at 11:45 a.m. and high school at 12:30 p.m.

MISD designated District of Innovation

The Moran Independent School District has been designated a District of Innovation, giving it more local control and flexibility.

Moran ISD superintendent John Denson said the district was notified by the Texas Education Agency Oct. 20 that the district’s application was approved .

“It gives us more opportunities to make our own decisions that will benefit us on the local level,” Denson said.

The superintendent said the district will have more freedom in such areas as setting the school calendar and hiring personnel.

Bulldogs close out football season with 50-0 win

The Moran Bulldogs closed out their football season in a big way last Thursday, defeating the Rochelle JV 50-0 at Mullin.

Moran scored 30 points in the second quarter to take a 44-0 halftime lead and ended the game with a touchdown in the third quarter.

“I couldn’t have asked for anything better,” Bulldogs coach John Hughes said. “We got a win and sent my lone senior (Arren Hawley) out on a winning note.”

Moran (2-7) rushed for 252 of its 262 total yards.

Super Bowl ends local Flag Football schedule

The Packers and Chiefs won their age division championships Monday night as the Albany NFL Flag Football League concluded its season this week with its Super Bowl week at Robert Nail Memorial Stadium.

The Packers won the Kindergarten-First Grade group, while the Chiefs won the Fourth-Sixth Grade division.

The Second-Third Grade division played Tuesday night, with Texas Tech winning the championship.

The league played its final regular season games Saturday at the Albany High School baseball field

JV finishes with 8-0 record

The Albany Lions junior varsity football team closed out its season last Thursday with a 54-16 victory against the Seymour Panthers at Robert Nail Memorial Stadium.

Albany finished the season 8-0.

“This has been a great season for these young men,” coach David Fair­child said. “I appreciate all their dedication and hard work.   I’m looking forward to a bright future for this group.”

Ashton Bailey and Cason Fairchild each scored three touchdowns, while Lute Wheeler passed for two TDs and two conversions.
