Bulldogs close out football season with 50-0 win
By Sam Waller
The Moran Bulldogs closed out their football season in a big way last Thursday, defeating the Rochelle JV 50-0 at Mullin.
Moran scored 30 points in the second quarter to take a 44-0 halftime lead and ended the game with a touchdown in the third quarter.
“I couldn’t have asked for anything better,” Bulldogs coach John Hughes said. “We got a win and sent my lone senior (Arren Hawley) out on a winning note.”
Moran (2-7) rushed for 252 of its 262 total yards.
Hawley accounted for 32 points with four touchdowns and four conversion kicks. He rushed for 194 yards with three TDs and caught one pass for 10 yards and a score.
“All the rest of the guys in that class when I first got here, when things got rough, they all took off and ran,” Hughes said. “Arren had a chance to run, too, but he stuck it out. I’m proud of him for that.”
Connor Hail rushed for 48 yards and a touchdown. Keagan Kilcrease rushed for 10 yards and a score.
Ellis Hise was one of four passing for 10 yards and a TD.
Hise led the defense with seven tackles. Hawley had six tackles and forced a fumble. Hail and Caleb York each had four tackles, Tyler Waddell had three, and Kilcrease and Cotten Campbell each had two.
Hail intercepted two passes, returning one for a touchdown. Waddell had an interception and a fumble recovery.
Moran, which began practice in August with just six players, was able to complete its schedule, having one game cancelled when illness struck the team. Hughes said avoiding injuries or grade issues that could have ended the season was significant.
“I had a pretty good group of guys,” he said. “Most of them are coming back next year. That’ll help out a lot.”
Junior High
Basketball
Low numbers forced Moran Junior High to play a co-ed game Monday in its season opener against May.
Hughes said the combined team played a half against the May girls and a half against the May boys.
May won 50-2. Kacenda Thompkins scored Moran’s lone basket.
In high school basketball, the varsity girls will host Strawn at 6:00 p.m. Friday in their season opener. The Lady Bulldogs visit Blanket at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday.
The varsity boys begin play Nov. 19 at Woodson.
