Summer workouts to get underway

Summer strength and conditioning workouts for students in grades 7-12 are being allowed by the UIL starting Monday, June 8  but will come with new restrictions due to concerns for the coronavirus pandemic.

The school district has offered summer conditioning programs for both boy and girl athletes for several years, and in more recent years has been allowed to offer certain sport specific instruction.

EMS says patients afraid to call 9-1-1

Members of the Shackelford County Hospital District’s board of directors met by “Uber conference” for the second month in a row, but tentatively plan to meet in person for the June 15 session.

All seven members checked in for the remote meeting, with mostly routine agenda items except for those related to -COVID-19.

District administrative Jera Fairley reported that patient visits at the clinic are still down drastically because of the pandemic scare, and even telehealth calls have decreased.

OJAC opening still unsure

The Old Jail Art Museum is still temporarily closed, but the facility is not short on virtual activities to educate learners of all ages.

Each Thursday at 3:30 p.m., a five minute “OJAC tiny-tour” will be posted on the OJAC’s website and Facebook page. New tours will post each Thursday until June 25. 

The virtual tour gives a sneak peak from the museum vault and galleries. Visitors also receive insider information from the OJAC’s docents and staff members.

Latest phase has little effect locally

County judge Robert Skelton reported updated COVID-19 testing numbers for the county on Monday, with 27 of the 28 tests administered returning negative and one still pending.

The county’s one positive case, which was officially reported last week, is no longer active, and that person has been released from home isolation, according to the judge.

Top students earn academic recognition

In the absence of an Academic Banquet, Albany welcomed secondary students to the school individually last week to receive their awards in an informal recognition process.

Students in each grade, seventh through 12th, were notified of a specific time to come to the high school gym lobby to return textbooks and receive their awards.

Seniors who took the ACT and SAT college entrance exams and had the highest composite scores were announced and received a monetary award. The total amount set aside for this year’s awards was $2,200. 

Morales moved to new AISD position

A new position of “administrative assistant to the superintendent” was approved by the Albany ISD board of trustees, and current secondary principal Edward Morales was moved to that role following a 30-minute closed session during Monday night’s regular meeting.

Stock show meeting set

The Shackelford County Youth and Livestock Association annual meeting will be held Tuesday, May 26 at 6:00 p.m. in the Albany High School ag classroom.

The SCYLA general meeting will convene first, and once it has been adjourned, the board of directors and officers will meet immediately following.

“The annual SCYLA meeting is to establish rules, elect officers, and discuss potential fundraisers for next year’s show,” said Shackelford County current president Bronco Askew.

AISD online registration to be available

Families of current and returning Nancy Smith Elementary students will be asked to go online to register for the 2020-2021 school year as soon as the link is published.

NSES administrative assistant Stephanie Gleitz said the school is working out some kinks before online registration goes live.

“Once we are ready for online registration, we will make an announcement on Bloomz, the school-wide communication program,” she said. “The online registration will be slightly different from last year.”

Moran park to get backboard

A new backboard for the basketball goal at Chuck Reynolds Park has been purchased, with community volunteers making plans to install it soon.

Sewer Project

The City of Moran has been notified that the grant for the sewer repair has been released.

City employee Theresa King said the contractor hired for the project will now be able to start the work.

Live graduation slated Saturday for Class of 2020

After weeks of wondering if it would happen at all, members of the Albany High School Class of 2020 will march out on the Robert Nail Memorial Stadium football field to graduate on Saturday, May 23 at 10:00 a.m.
