Scott wins area in four events

Moran’s Alli Scott won four events at the District 13-1A track meet Thursday, April 13, at May, taking the first step toward a return to the state meet.

Scott, a two-time state qualifier, will compete in the area meet on Thursday, April 20 (today), at Hermleigh. A top-four finish at area earns her a trip to the Region II-1A meet Friday-Saturday, April 28-29, at San Angelo.

The Lady Bulldogs finished fifth in the standings with 43 points, while the Moran boys were sixth with three points.

Pitching performances augment Lion hitting

The Albany Lions are officially qualified for the Class 2A baseball playoffs after running their winning streak to seven.

The Lions (15-2 overall, 7-1 District 8-2A) wrap up the regular season with a pair of home games – Friday, April 21 against Stamford and Tuesday, April 25 against Cisco. Both games are slated for 5:00 p.m. starts.

Lady Lions fight to overcome adjustments

The Albany Lady Lions endured a difficult week, splitting games with Baird and Cross Plains, as they look to get back on the right path with the softball playoffs looming.

Albany (15-12-1 overall, 7-3 District 8-2A) visited Cisco on Tuesday, April 18, falling 15-0. Details will be reported next week.

The Lady Lions close out regular play at 5:00 p.m. Friday, April 21 with a road game at Eula. The Class 2A playoffs start next week.

4-Hers place at shooting contest

Shackelford County 4-H members had a solid showing Saturday, April 15 at the Texas 4-H Shooting Sports Extravaganza.

Landon Kreitler took first place in both senior skeet and senior sporting clay in the competition held at the Texas 4-H Conference Center at Lake Brownwood.

Landon Herrell placed third in intermediate skeet and fourth in intermediate sporting clay.

Carly Kreitler was second in junior air pistol silhouette and fifth in junior air pistol. Tanner Howe was fourth in junior air pistol silhouette.

Tickets being sold for PS5

About 100 tickets have been sold for Project Graduation’s raffle of a Sony PlayStaion 5 gaming console.

“We definitely want to sell more,” Project Graduation organizer Amanda Tabor said.

Tickets are one for $5 or five for $20. The prize drawing will be held Monday, May 8. The PS5 is retailing for $499.99.

The 33 members of the Albany High School Class of 2023 will hold commencement ceremonies Friday, May 26. The graduation party will follow.

6 students to compete at regional UIL

Six Albany High School students will compete in the Region II-2A UIL Academic Meet on Friday at Grayson College in Denison.

Five of the qualifiers are entered in journalism events, with one student advancing to the regional level in computer science.

The students qualified for the regional level contest by placing in the top three at the district meet held in Stamford in March.

Changes made in stock show rules

A few changes were made for the 2024 Shackelford Youth and Livestock Show on Tuesday, April 11 at the Shackelford Youth and Livestock Association’s annual meeting.

Shackelford County extension agent Kelsey Bell said slight changes were made to the commercial steer class, which made its debut at the 2023 show in January, as well as to how swine will be classified.

The Association also approved the purchase of a photo backdrop for exhibitors to pose in front of with their animals.

Auction items still available

Matthews Memorial Presbyterian Church’s fundraising efforts for its summer mission trip to Belize will continue with three items up for bid following the concert and auction held at the Aztec Theater.

“The worship concert and auction went well,” MMPC youth minister Becky Wills said. “We had a good turnout and raised a good amount of money.”

Cox celebrates 90th birthday

A reception was held at First Baptist Church Albany to recognize Frances Cox’s 90th birthday.

Four generations of her family as well as friends, neighbors and her “church family” enjoyed cake and punch while exchanging congratulations.

Nearly 70 signatures were added to a pink and blue floral memory quilt created to honor this special milestone.

5th Sunday worship set April 30

An evening of praise and worship is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Sunday, April 30 at The Feed Store to celebrate the fifth Sunday of the month.

Organizer Kyle Viertel said the event is open to all ages and denominations.

“Everyone is welcome,” Viertel said. “It will be nondenominational contemporary Christian worship.”
