Scott named to MSU dean’s list

Taylor Scott of Albany was listed on the Dean’s List at Midwestern State University for the spring 2021  semester.

She completed 12 or more hours with a grade point average of 3.50 to 3.74.

Taylor Scott is the daughter of Jonathan and Jenny Scott and is studying Radiologic Technology.

Moran musicals to resume

After a lapse of more than a year, Moran’s monthly country and western musical will resume this month on Saturday, May 22 from 5:00 to 10:00 p.m. at the Moran Community Center.

Moran singer-songwriter M.L. “Marty” Clifford is again coordinating the event, which was first held in the spring of 2019.

Clifford plans to hold the musical on the fourth Saturday of each month.

Proceeds will benefit local organizations such as the fire department and the Moran city park, said Clifford.

There is no cover charge, but snacks will be available to purchase.

Pool Splash Day set June 1

The Albany City pool will open to the general public on Tuesday, June 1,  with a one-day-only, free-admittance, Splash Day. 

Albany City pool co-managers this summer are Jennifer Bowman and Dakota Fowler, who have both previously run the facility.

The managers will work in the concession area, sell  swim passes, and keep up with the lifeguards. 

Typically, the city hires around 15 lifeguards each summer.

MISD end-of-year events accelerate

Moran Independent School District students have a host of activities during their last week of school next week. 

MISD students and staff participated in the ResourceCare spring Health Fair last Friday, and there have also been several other field trips in recent weeks.

On Monday, May 17, the Moran ISD school board met to officially hire a new superintendent and to elect officers. 

County students attend health fair

Shackelford County ResourceCare hosted the 17th annual spring health fair at the Bank Park last Friday, May 14.

“We had students from Nancy Smith Elementary School and Mother’s Day Out here in Albany, and Moran brought 60 students,” said ResourceCare program director Mindy Ary. “The children enjoyed all of the games, prizes, snow cones, and popcorn.”

Local ranch team tops Western Heritage rodeo

Several Albany residents competed at the 36th annual Western Heritage Classic in Abilene earlier this month after last year’s event was cancelled due to COVID concerns.

Matthews/Nail Ranch of Albany won first place in the Ranch Rodeo division. The team previously won the same title in 2019. 

Green Land & Cattle Company took second place in the contest. 

Fiddlers Contest

Shackelford County was well represented in the WHC Fiddlers Contest on Saturday, May 8. 

Lions to face Hawley in quarterfinal series

The Lion baseball team won two straight games in the area series last week against Ozona, advancing to the regional quarterfinal round of the playoffs starting Friday.

Albany (20-3-1) will face district foe Hawley (12-20-0, 5-5) for the playoff rematch starting on Friday  at 1:00 p.m., with Game 2 set for 1:00 p.m. Saturday. A third game will follow the second bout if needed.

The series is set for Abilene High School, depending on the weather.

Local youth sports camps to start June 1-3

Local students will have the opportunity to participate in several sports camps during the summer break, including one scheduled June 1-3 the week after school ends.

The first camp combines three sports – football, baseball and basketball – with one day of instruction dedicated to each.

The All-Sports Camp is open to both boys and girls.

Golf tourney postponed

The annual Father’s Day golf tournament hosted by the Albany Golf Club has been postponed, according to Albany Golf Club representative James Waters, because new greens currently under construction won’t be ready in time.

Wednesday afternoon scrambles are continuing as weather permits.

Rifle raffle continues

Tickets are available for the 2021 Clay Break Classic Gun Raffle benefitting the Ben Richey Boys Ranch and Family Program. 

Four guns have been donated by Beverley and Buford Salters and include two Zenith Tedna SE12Ts, a Weatherby PA-08, and a  Marlin XS7 bolt-action .243 Winchester.

Tickets are $20 each or three for $50. Purchase by calling 325-762-6225.

The drawing will be held on Sunday, June 6.
