Flags to fly on Monday

Local businesses and residents are encouraged to join with patriots across the United States next Monday, June 14 in the annual cele­bration of Flag Day.

Individuals and business owners who have their own flags are asked to put them up for the day, except in case of inclement weather.

Community cleanup set Saturday

The Albany Chamber of Commerce will hold the annual community-wide clean-up day on Saturday, June 12.

All area citizens are encouraged to come out and help work on projects aimed at beautifying the town of Albany, and the annual clean-up day is a good way for many people to get volunteer hours.

“All volunteers can meet at the Depot at 8:00 a.m.,” said Chamber manager Mary Beth Jones.

LeMay competes at rodeo finals

Local cowboy Will LeMay finished his eighth grade year by winning big at the Texas Junior High Rodeo Association Region 3 competition and earning a trip to the state finals. 

LeMay finished the regional contest as the breakaway roping champion, winning second place in goat tying and fifth in team roping, as well as coming out as the Region 3 finals team roping champion.

  He went on to complete in those same events at the TJHRA state finals last week in Gonzales. 

Denton to compete in state rodeo finals

Recent Albany High School graduate Addie Beth Denton will compete at the Texas High School Rodeo Finals scheduled for Sunday, June 6 to Saturday, June 12 at the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene. 

This will be Denton’s fourth year to qualify for the THSR state finals.

Texas is divided into 10 regions, and each region sends the top 10 individuals to the state competition in Abilene. 

Competitors who land in the top four will advance to the National High School Rodeo finals held in Lincoln, Nebraska in July.

Funds left over for 2020 seniors

The Albany High School Class of 2020 has a surplus of money in last year’s  class activity fund that has been divided between the 42 seniors from the class.

Class parent Susie Beard said the money can be picked up at the AHS office from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m..

“Students will have to sign that they received the money,” said Beard.
“All money must be picked up before Aug. 1, but the school would like these funds picked up as soon as possible.”

Blood drive planned June 10

A blood drive is scheduled to take place in Albany next Thursday afternoon, June 10.

Hendrick Regional Blood Center will park its bloodmobile at First Baptist Church at the usual time from 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.

­COVID-19 antibody testing is offered at no charge for donors who successfully donate.

The blood center depends on volunteer blood donors to supply 100 percent of the blood that is used for patient care at 17 area hospitals.

Sunday morning fire destroys trailer

The Albany Volunteer Fire Department responded to a small structure fire on Conrad Street in the early morning hours on Sunday, May 30.

On arrival, volunteers found a trailer fully engulfed in flames. 

According to AVFD assistant fire chief Eric Johnson, eight volunteer firefighters responded with two engines and two rescue trucks. 

“A single hose line was deployed by three firefighters to suppress the flames,” said Johnson. “Other responders on scene assisted with performing overhaul activities.”

Camp registration ends today

Today is the last day to register for Day Camp 2021 sponsored by ResourceCare.

Parents may sign up their children from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Albany Youth Center. 

ResourceCare programs assistant Ragan Riley said all campers must be registered by Thursday, as there will be no late registrations.

Commodities to be distributed Friday

Pick-up dates for the June distribution of the commodity food program  provided by Shackelford County are June 3 and 4.

Certified families in Moran should pick up their food at Moran City Hall between 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 3. 

Albany families who have been certified as eligible for the June distribution may pick up their food on Friday, June 4 from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the rear door of the JP office.
