Veterans Day program, Thanksgiving meal set
By Sam Waller
Moran ISD will conduct its Veterans Day program at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 10 (today) at the school gymnasium.
Members of American Legion Post 423 in Cross Plains will make a flag presentation, students from sixth grade, kindergarten and Pre-K will sing, and Moran graduate Jeff Martin will perform as the school recognizes veterans from the community.
Thanksgiving Meal
Moran will serve its Thanksgiving meal Wednesday, Nov. 16.
The event is open to all community members.
Meals will cost $3.83 for adults and $3.05 for non-school aged children. Student lunches are free.
Pre-K and kindergarten students will start lunch at 10:45 am and will eat in their classrooms. First through fifth graders will begin lunch at 11:00 a.m. followed by the junior high (sixth-eighth) at 11:45 a.m. High school students will begin eating at 12:30 p.m.
Families will be able to dine together regardless of students’ grade.
Meat Judging
The Moran FFA meat judging team finished fourth in the team standings Saturday, Nov. 5 at the Texas Tech Invitational in its first outing of the school year.
Ellis Hise placed ninth individually with a total of 625 points, 20 points higher than his best score from last spring.
“We had a top-five team and a top-10 individual,” Moran superintendent Dr. John Denson said. “That’s a pretty good start.”
The contest included placing classes, a written exam, retail identification, quality grading, and yield grading. In placing classes, Moran’s Cotten Campbell scored 294 points out of a possible 300.
“That’s one of the toughest parts of the contest,” Denson said. “That deserves a little bit of recognition.”
Other team members were Allen Hebel and Tyler Hale.
Moran FFA members will compete in the Big Country District Leadership Development Event contest on Monday, Nov. 14 at Cisco. Qualifiers from district advance to the Area IV contest on Monday, Nov. 21 at Abilene Wylie.
UIL Contests
Elementary and junior high UIL events for writing and chess were conducted Wednesday, Nov. 9 on campus for Moran students.
“We do part of our UIL contests here and send them in to be judged,” principal Jo Hise said.
Results will be announced when the rest of the district UIL meet is held Wednesday, Nov. 30 and Thursday, Dec. 1 at Cross Plains. Speaking events will be held the first day.
Security Upgrades
Work is nearing completion on security upgrades throughout Moran ISD with the replacement of more than 40 doors.
“We’ve been working on doors and locks every week and have replaced a couple of outside doors,” Denson said. “We’re closing the door on that.”
Denson said the work has cost the district approximately $13,000. Two doors, for the agriculture building and culinary arts building, had to be custom made.
“We budgeted for it going into the year because of safety issues,” Denson said. “With new legislation, it was a necessity.”
Denson said he expects at least some of the cost to be covered by state grants.
“The governor has put aside about $4 million to help with school security. I’m not sure yet how much each school will get. It’s something that needed to be done, whether we got the money from the state or had to take it out of our budget.”
Denson said the work is scheduled to be completed by the end of the fall semester.
