Pig sale raises funds for youth

The 35th annual First Impressions Invitational Pig Sale, which benefits the Shackelford County Youth & Livestock Association, brought in more than $65,000 in sales Sunday, according to Mike Parsons, one of the organizers.

“We averaged $707 on 92 head,” Parsons said. “We had about 260 registered buyers. We anticipate that the Association will make $3,000 to $5,000 off the sale to put in for the kids.”

Parsons said the two-day event drew a good crowd.

“Our stock was well received and our consignors were very pleased,” he said. “We appreciate all the volunteers, all the hard work by local people that allows us to do the sale.”

Parsons said the event’s history helps it continue a successful run. Last year’s sale produced 10 animals that won classes or championships at shows ranging from Jack County to the State Fair of Texas.

“These results are what attract our buyers year after year,” he said. “And our sponsors help us bring in better livestock because they add about $3,000 to the prize money that consignors are eligible for.”

The event’s champion crossbred pig brought the weekend’s highest price at $5,000, while three other animals sold for more than $3,000.

“Our Texas pigs sold quite a bit better than they have in the past,” Parsons said. “Most of the time, the northern pigs are the higher sellers. The Texas pigs were very well received this year.”
