Moran ISD began the second week of classes as projects that will change the look of the campus got underway.

A new floor is being installed in the gym and a security fence is being erected on school grounds.

Superintendent Dr. John Denson said the gym project began Monday, Aug. 14, with workers removing the old floor. The project is expected to be completed in three weeks.

“We’re going to save some of the best pieces of the old floor that we can, and the ag department is going to try to make some mementos,” Denson said. “We hope to have those to auction off at our ag banquet in the spring.”

The fencing will bring the district into compliance with state recommendations regarding student safety.

“Once that’s completed, we’ll have one main entry for everybody coming to the school,” Denson said. “It will almost give the campus a courtyard kind of feel. All visitors will have to come through the front door.”

Up And Running

Moran principal Jo Hise said the new morning program in which secondary students are placed into family groups has been received enthusiastically.

Students have participated in a number of activities such as card and board games as they get to know each other.

New Class

Denson announced the creation of a new agriculture practicum class that he hopes will benefit students and the district alike.

“Students will work for the school and learn building trades,” he said. “We’re going to call them our campus improvement team, and they’re going to help with any kind of maintenance work the can learn. The students will clock in, and we’ll pay them minimum wage while they’re working.”

The class will meet daily for 90 minutes with students assisting in tasks from groundskeeping to installing AC units.
