Local exhibitors show in Abilene

Myleigh Leveridge of Albany placed first in Class 7 with her Hereford heifer Saturday at the West Texas Fair and Rodeo in Abilene.
The 9-month-old unbred heifer advanced to the championship judging, but did not place.
“In this division, they only have a grand and a reserve champion,” Nickie Leveridge, Myleigh’s mother, said. “She could not compete with some of the bigger cows.”
Heifers were divided into classes based on their date of birth.
The calf was bred by Leveridge’s grandfather, Mike Leveridge.
Leveridge, a freshman at Albany High School, will continue to exhibit the calf at other shows this season.
“We’ll definitely take it to San Angelo,” Nickie Leveridge said. “She’ll get to show her again next year because you get to show for two years with a heifer. Then it will just become part of our herd.”
Leveridge will return to the show ring Sunday in the WTFR’s Other Registered Breed Show with a Chianina heifer and a Shorthorn Plus heifer.
“She’s had great success with her Shorthorn Plus at many other shows,” Nickie Leveridge said. “We’re excited to see how she does this weekend.”
Albany High School agriculture teacher Chris Beard said several other local students will be exhibiting animals at WTFR shows in the coming weeks.
Gracie Price has three heifers and two steers entered, while Kam Browning has two steers competing.
Hattie Braly and Kenzie Neve each have two steers entered. Beard said Neve is also scheduled to exhibit steers at the State Fair of Texas and the Heart of Texas Fair.
In other events, Albany’s Carter Carrion, Cooper Carrion, Hadley Stapp, and Madeline Stapp have pigs entered in the swine show.
On Saturday, Donald McCullough, Landon Kreitler, and Judson Rogers will participate in the regular calf scramble. Christopher Hensley is entered in the scholarship calf scramble on Sept. 16.
