Exhibitors place well at San Angelo

Shackelford County 4-H and FFA members brought back an assortment of prizes from the San Angelo Stock Show recently.

“It was a stellar outing for Shackelford County, especially following the wins at Fort Worth,” said Albany ag instructor Chris Beard. “It’s pretty exciting to see all the successes.”

Breed reserve champion banners were won by Hannah Snyder and Huffman Heatly, Tyler Beard earned a belt buckle and scholarship money, and other local youth also placed well.

Junior Heifers

Gracie Price was busy on Friday, Feb. 8, with multiple animals entered in the junior heifer show. 

Price showed a ORB heifer in class 1, ring B to seventh place. The junior high student later showed her Maine Anjou in class 1, ring A to a red second place ribbon. Before the day was over, Price was back in ring B and took fourth in class 12 with her Chianina.

Stars Gilt Show

Top placing animals in the Stars Gilt Show Feb. 8-10 qualified for the premium sale on Feb. 12.

Hannah Snyder’s Poland China gilt, exhibited by Connor Smith, won first in its class and came back to be named breed reserve champion, qualifying for the pedigree Junior Stars Gilt sale on Feb. 9.

Beard mentioned that Snyder and several additional animal owners were ill or had conflicts with sports, so other students stepped in to show for them.

Tatum Grady’s gilt placed first in her class of cross breds, earning her a spot in the non-pedigreed part of the Junior Stars Gilt sale on Feb. 10.

Caroline Chapman’s Yorkshire gilt took third in her class, while Connor Smith placed fifth in cross bred gilts, and Heatly earned fifth place with a Duroc gilt. Laithe Leech’s Poland gilt was sixth.

Other local youth showing in the gilt show were Devan Henson, Tyler Beard, Leddie Leech, Allison Lemond, and Chloe Anderson.

Jr. Breeding Gilts

Heatly won first in class 4 Duroc gilts. His pig was named reserve champion Duroc.

Hannah Snyder took second with her Dark OPB gilt in class 3.

Chapman’s Yorkshire gilt was fifth in class 1.

Also showing junior breeding gilts at San Angelo were Lemond, Tyler Beard, Leddie Leech, Laithe Leech, and Henson.

Jr. Market Barrows

Tye Edgar placed second in class 31, Dark OPB barrows, and made the premium sale on Feb. 12.

Cash Edgar also earned a coveted slot in the San Angelo sale with a third in class 1 Hampshire, while Hannah Snyder took fifth in class 2 Hampshire barrows, and Chapman was 10th in class 14 Dark Cross.

Others were Cooper Edgar, Laithe Leech, Callan Edgar, Leddie Leech, Anderson, Caroline Chapman, Isaiah Carrillo, Carli Edgar, Tristan Edgar, Chelsy Parsons, Madison Wilkins, Cutter Edgar, Ryleigh Waters, Ryder Wilkins, Jalea Bowman, Clay Chapman, Addie Denton, Blanton Belcher, Tyler Beard, Pecos Duke, Susie Cormack, and Trey Snyder.

Jr. Market Steers

Kenzie Neve showed a shorthorn steer and JT Holland exhibited a Hereford.

Calf Scramble

Tyler Beard won his calf scramble preliminary heat at San Angelo, earning a belt buckle and the right to come back in the Scholarship Scramble on Saturday, Feb. 9.

He caught in the finals for seventh place overall and a $500 scholarship.
