Shackelford County 4-H kicked off its new year with an organizational meeting Monday at The Feed Store.

Shackelford County extension agent Kelsey Bell said the gathering drew about 80 attendees with 23 4-Hers enrolling in projects.

“We had seven adult volunteers who gave out information about their respective programs that they’re running this year,” Bell said. “Parents were given information about what the year is going to look like in each of those programs.”

Bell said upcoming programs will include food and nutrition, sewing and fashion, shooting sports, and equine projects. Several other areas also drew interest.

“We have two programs kicking off this month, both on Sept. 23,” said Bell, “cooking at 3:45 at Nancy Smith and Horse Club at 6:00 p.m. at the show barn.”

The county agent reported on new programs that might be established this year, including outdoor education, forestry, entomology, dog training, aquatic science, and fishing.

“Those are some interesting things we haven’t had in the past,” she said. “I’m going to see if I can get some programs going in those areas.”

Bell stated that the 4-H organization will continue accepting enrollment for another month.

The next meeting is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. Oct. 4 at The Feed Store.

“The week of Oct. 2-9 is National 4-H Week,” Bell said. “We’re planning to do some service projects, and we’ll also elect our officers that week.”
