National 4-H Week is scheduled for Oct. 3-9 with more than a week’s worth of activities scheduled for Shackelford County 4-Hers.

“I’m trying to use that week as a really big push to  promote everything we have going on and encourage people to get their kids involved,” Shackelford County extension agent Kelsey Bell said. “We’re highlighting community service. A huge part of 4-H is teaching our kids the value of serving our community.”

Things kick off Friday with a float in the Albany homecoming parade.

On Sunday, the first meeting and practice for shooting sports will be held.

The first official Shackelford County 4-H meeting is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. Monday at The Feed Store. Officer elections will be held at that time.

“I want to see at this meeting what night of the week is best for regular meetings,” Bell said. “In a small town, it’s practically impossible to schedule something to accommodate everyone, but we’ll try to do the best we can.”

Cooking Club practice is set for 3:45 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 7 at the Nancy Smith Elementary School cafeteria.

Saturday, Oct. 9 is 4-H One Day with a multifaceted service project in the works.

“4-H One Day is a nationwide event where all 4-H clubs in the nation participate in community service,” Bell said. “This year’s project is headed by Moran senior Johnnie Hise. She wanted to provide aid for hurricane relief efforts in Louisiana.”

The first part of the project, a Cooking Club bake sale, raised $248 for the purchase of bug repellent for relief workers.

Members of the Sewing Club will make toothbrush holders and contribute brushes and tubes of toothpaste.

The Horse Club is partnering with Closet Angels to provide clothing donations, and Shackelford County 4-H as a whole is conducting a bottled water drive. Water may be dropped off at the courthouse through Oct. 9.
