Grandparents week, book fair continues today, tomorrow

By Melinda L. Lucas

Grandparents Week at Nancy Smith Elementary continues today and tomorrow, along with the annual Book Fair, which is set up on the cafeteria stage.

The school is hosting the special week for grandparents, with help from Albany PTO members, who are sponsoring the book fair.

For the next couple of days, grandparents and other senior adults are invited to bring a lunch to eat with students.

“We had a great first day,” PTO officer Brandi Lehew said on Monday afternoon. “It’s always a fun week for the kids, and we enjoy seeing them light up when they realize that the book fair is set up.”

Lehew added that the PTO members are excited about the selection of books being offered this year.

She wanted to make sure that any homeschool parents and community members are welcome to shop for books along with NSES students.

“Please reach out to PTO via email (albany.tx.pto@gmail.com), and we can arrange a time for you to come view the fair with your kids,” Lehew said.

School lunches are not available to purchase, but visitors can bring their own meals, according to NSES counselor Susie Beard, who is coordinating Grandparents Week at the campus.

Lunch periods at the campus are staggered from 10:15 a.m. through 1:00 p.m.

Photos are available at a cost of $3 each or two for $5, or they can be taken for free with visitors’ phones.

The photo orders will be printed at the end of each day and delivered to the student.

If a grandparent has grandchildren in multiple grades, arrangements can be made to eat with all students during a single lunch period.

Book Fair

Going on at the same time as Grandparents Week is the Albany Parent-Teachers Organization’s annual Book Fair, which is set up in the cafeteria.

In addition to books for different levels of readers, there will be the usual assortment of books, games, posters, bookmarks, and other supplies.

Friends, family, and community members can purchase gift cards for a particular student or teacher or for the PTO to have on hand for students who do not have the funds to buy books.

Links are posted on the Albany PTO Facebook page.

“PTO strives to make sure every student receives a book,” Lehew said. “If you would like to help out with this project, you can purchase a gift card online, send a donation through our Venmo account, or give money to a PTO officer.”
