Girls FCA camp draws over 200

By Sam Waller

The Big Country Fellowship of Christian Athletes’ girls Weekend of Champions drew more than 200 participants Saturday-Sunday, Feb. 1-2 to Eastland’s Solid Rock Encampment.

Local FCA representative Paul Johnston, who has been involved in the event for nearly a decade and oversees the girls weekend, said 170 students between eighth and 12th grades attended this year, along with 50 adult volunteers.

“It was a great camp,” Johnston said. “There were a lot of great moments, a lot of lives that were changed. Everyone there grew their faith stronger.”

The boys Weekend of Champions was held Saturday-Sunday, Jan. 25-26 at Solid Rock.

Albany’s Betsy Spraberry, who serves as an FCA Field Ambassador, was also involved in the girls event.

“Betsy and another lady come up with a theme and develop the talks that are given, then we put it into practice,” Johnston said.

Spraberry led the volunteers who helped organize the weekend. Johnston said 30 of those volunteers were from Albany or Moran.

“I’m extremely fortunate to be surrounded by so many ladies who are willing to volunteer and serve to make this camp a success,” Johnston said. “It not only serves the young ladies and teaches them, but I think the adults get as much out of it as the teenage girls do.”

Spraberry said the program included training on how to use the Bible and pray as well as hearing testimonies and truth about dating, addictions, and the importance of walking with God in this world.

“It’s such an honor to work with the women of Albany and the surrounding areas to put together a discipleship weekend for these girls,” she said. “No doubt each person involved left filled up and overflowing with a new passion to know and love God.”
