After a year-long delay, the 2016-2017 Shackelford County audit was presented and approved at Monday’s commissioners meeting, and work will begin soon on the 2017-2018 audit to get the books back on schedule, according to county treasurer Tammy Brown.

She explained that the previous company, with new ownership, gave notice more than a year ago that they would no long perform the county’s audits. It had taken some time, she said, to find a new accounting firm and then get all the information sorted out.

CPA Gayla Fullerton presented the audit, with two findings having to do with internal controls, which she believes will be addressed, as well as another finding that is “common” with smaller entities, Fullerton said.

The audit was approved.

Property Deeds

At the request of the Tax Appraisal District office, commissioners granted a “deed without warranty” for three Moran properties for which bids have been received.

Purchase of the properties will mean that they go back on the tax rolls and that court costs will be paid. Anything left of the purchase price will be divided among the taxing entities that are affected.

Vehicle Purchase

County judge Bob Skelton reported that he had purchased a 2004 Chevrolet Suburban for $3,500 that will be used to transport clients from the Walker-Sayle Unit to work in Shackelford County.

The commissioners had agreed last week that any of the commissioners or the judge could make a decision independently as long as the price did not exceed $6,000.

Other Business

•Commissioners agreed to lift the county-wide burn temporarily.

•A proclamation was adopted declaring April 14-20 as Public Safety Telecommunications Week, and the court witnessed a presentation by sheriff Ed Miller to one of his dispatchers, Jasmine Cangas, for her recent handling of a 9-1-1 call.

•Skelton reported that federal regulations require that a CDL drug and alcohol testing policy be developed for county employees. Action was tabled until the next meeting.

•The next regular meeting will be held on April 29 rather than April 22 because of a conflict with a jury trial.

•Justice of the peace James Breeden requested that the court consider purchase of a freezer for  Moran commodities.
