Tax statements to be mailed soon

About 25,000 tax statements will be mailed in the next week or so, as local property owners find out what they will owe in taxes for this year. Interim Chief appraiser Richard Petree at the Shackelford County Appraisal District (SCAD) office stated that tax rates for all eight county taxing entities have been entered, and statements are scheduled to start mailing on Friday, Oct.

RUTH CALDWELL

Ruth McEntire Caldwell, better known as “Tootles” or “Toots,” a nickname given to her by her father, died Oct. 19, 2024 at her home in Abilene. She was 87. Owner of the U Ranch in Sterling City, which dates back to 1880, Ruth was the historian and keeper of its legacy. She will be missed by the West Texas ranching community.

Fandangle officers elected

Officers were reelected at the annual meeting of the Fort Griffin Fandangle Association last week. David Waller was again named board president for the coming year with Branch Bartee serving as vice president.

Band gets I’s from all 5 judges

The Albany Ragin’ Red Band brought home a Division I rating from the Seymour Marching Contest last Saturday, earning the top rating from all five judges. The group will compete next at the UIL Marching Contest that is set for Monday, Oct.
As a part of its preparation for next week’s UIL marching competition, the Ragin’ Red Band participated in a two-part festival in Seymour last Saturday, where the group ended up with Division I ratings from all five judges.
