Candlelight services set Dec. 24

Tonight is Chrismas Eve and several local churches have announced their traditional Christmas services scheduled for the holiday.

First Christian 

First Christian Church will hold its traditional Christmas Eve candlelight communion service at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 24.

MMPC

Matthews Memorial Presbyterian Church will have a 6:00 p.m. Christmas Eve service on Thursday, Dec. 24.

Moran ISD classes to resume Jan. 4

The Moran Independent School District will be closed for the Christmas break through Friday, Jan. 1. Classes will resume at their regular time on Monday, Jan. 4.

The varsity girls basketball team traveled to Graford on Friday, Dec. 15. The Lady Bulldogs came up short losing 47-19, bringing their record to 0-5.

Dariann Hawley was Moran’s leading scorer with 15 points, followed by Emily Murk and Chloe Hendricks with two points each.

Stock show fundraising begins

The Shackelford County Youth and Livestock Association met on Tuesday, Dec. 10, to finalize plans for this year’s stock show, and with a large number of entries expected, the annual fundraising drive is underway. 

Livestock show fundraising letters were sent out to the community two weeks ago, according to association treasurer Molly Cauble.

“Our goal is to have all donations in by Friday, Jan. 8, so final preparations can be made,” Cauble said.

Old Jail still finds ways to offer programs

Despite the challenges of 2020, the Old Jail Art Center has found unique ways to continue to offer programming that serves a variety of patrons. 

In response to the OJAC’s continued offerings throughout the past year, the board of trustees and staff are asking for contributions to the Annual Fund Appeal.

The Annual Fund Appeal is the single most important fundraiser the OJAC initiates to support operations and programs.

Donations still sought for scholarship

During September, on the late Robert Nail’s birth date, and on through the Albany High School homecoming week, support was sought during the annual fundraising drive for “Dollars for Bob’s Scholarships.” 

However, the fundraising effort continues all through the year, and members of the Albany Ex-Students Association are asking Albany graduates and others to remember the fund in their end-of-year giving.

Albany girls to host Early next Tuesday

Both the Lion and Lady Lion varsity teams came up short last week, but both JV squads brought home victories.

All four teams were in action Tuesday, Dec. 22 in Hawley, which was the second district game for the girls and the district opener for the boys.

Results were not available due to an early deadline but will be reported in the next issue of the News on Jan. 7.

The varsity and JV girls will host Early on Tuesday. Dec. 29 starting at 2:00 p.m. with the JV girls, followed by the varsity girls at about 3:15 p.m.

Hill, Cotter named to all-state volleyball team

Two Albany volleyball players have been named to the 2A All-State team by the Texas Girls Coaches Association.

Senior Alli Hill and junior Sarah Beth Cotter were both selected to the top honor following the Lady Lions’ successful season that saw the local team advance to the state semi-final for only the second time in program history.

“Alli is so versatile and can play at any position on the court,” head volleyball coach M.J. Reneau said. “She was a huge part of our success this year, earning the District MVP award.”

DAR names Albany, Moran Good Citizens

Albany High School senior Jackson Chapman was recently named as one of the receipients of the Lee’s Legion Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution 2021 DAR Good Citizen Award. 

Chapman was one of three area seniors selected by his high school faculty for the honor. 

Dariann Hawley was selected to represent Moran High School, along with Liberty Fox from Cisco High School. 

Commodities to be distributed to county families on Jan. 7-8

Pick-up dates for the upcoming January distribution of the commodity food program will be Thursday, Jan. 7 and Friday, Jan. 8.

Certified eligible families in Moran should pick up their monthly commodity food at the Moran City Hall between 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 7. 

Albany families who have been certified as eligible for the November food distribution program may pick up their food on Friday, Jan. 8, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the rear door of the JP office.

Rogers recognized

The annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest fundraiser for Alzheimer’s care, support, and research. 

Beverly Rogers who heads up “Team Albany” was recently recognized in several categories for her fundraising efforts in the Abilene Regional District of the North Texas Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. 

Rogers first became involved in the organization in 2002 after providing in-home care for a patient suffering from dementia.
