Youth teams to finish with tournament

Albany’s entries in the Big Country Youth Basketball Association wrapped up their regular season Saturday,Jan.27,andnow turn their attention to the postseason tournament.

The tournament for all teams will be played Saturday, Feb. 3 at Eula.

Lastweek’sgirlsgames were played at Albany because widespread illness forcedoriginalhostMerkel to close school.

The boys teams did not play because Anson also closed school for sickness and a suitable replacement site could not be arranged.

GIRLS Sixth Grade

Albany’s sixth grade girls swept two games, defeating Merkel and Eula 34-13.

Against Merkel, Albany jumped out to a 15-2 halftime lead. Burkley Yeates scored 14 points andKarterThompsonhad 11. Presley Rosales added fourpoints,withKimberly Howe and Loralie Balliew each scoring two.

Against Eula, Albany led 19-4 at halftime. Thompson scored 17 points, followed by Yeates with nine, Artie Bell with four, and Rosales and Balliew with two apiece.

Fifth Grade

The Albany fifth grade girls had a busy day with three games, falling 7-4 to Eula, 16-4 to Merkel and 12-0 to Hawley.

Against Eula, Romie Hinshaw scored four points. Against Merkel, Addisyn Peacock and Zamiah Dockins each scored two.

Tournament Time Thefourbracketsguarantee each team two games with some teams playing three.

Fifth grade games will be played at Eula’s middle school gym with girls starting at 9:00 a.m. and boys at 2:00 p.m.

The sixth grade teams will play in the high school gym with boys starting at 9:00 a.m. and girls at 2:40 p.m.

Games will consist of two 16-minute halves with a running clock. Tie games will have a twominute overtime.Asecond overtime, if necessary, will be sudden-death.

Albany’s sixth grade boys will be the first local team to take the court, playing Merkel at 9:00 a.m. Albany will play Jim Ned, Anson or Hawley in the second round with a third game possible.

The fifth grade girls will take on Eula Maroon at 9:50 a.m. Albany’s second opponent will be Eula White, Hawley, or Merkel.

The fifth grade boys take on Merkel at 2:00 p.m. with a game against Jim Ned Blue, Hawley, or Eula. The team could also play a third game.

The sixth grade girls will play Eula at 3:40 p.m. with a second game againstHawleyorMerkel.
