Fifth and sixth grade youth basketball season continued with games in Eula and Stamford Jan. 19.

Both fifth grade teams brought back victories from Eula, but the sixth grade boys and girls did not fare as well in Stamford.

5th Grade Boys

The fifth grade boys are undefeated this season, improving to a 4-0 record after two wins on Saturday.

“The boys played really well in our first game against Hawley,” said coach John Tom Heatly. “The score was 18-7 at the half and 43-11 at the end, which shows how well our team played in the second half.”

Brody Oliver, Gatlin Wills, Breylon Billington, and Jackson Shack were cited on defense.

Scoring for Albany were Huffman Heatly 16, Calhan Fairchild 14, Woods Peterson 6, Cade Fairchild 5, and Mason McCloy 4.

The team found themselves trailing Jim Ned #2 by a score of 4-0 at halftime of their second game.

“We played good defense in the first half, but we just couldn’t get the ball in the basket,” said Heatly. “We played back-to-back games without rest and we got a little tired, but the boys fought through adversity and played good enough to get the win 15-9. We didn’t shoot the ball well or make our free throws, but I was proud of all the boys.”

Scoring for Albany were Cade Fairchild 7, Calhan Fairchild 4, Huffman Heatly 2, and Peterson 2.

5th Grade Girls

“The girls played really well both games,” said coach Clint Chapman. “They are beginning to get the ball in the basket, and their defense has been really good. I am proud of their hustle and effort in both games.”

The fifth grade girls defeated Jim Ned #2 by 10-2, then returned to the court an hour later to take Eula 17-7.

“Everyone is contributing,” said Chapman.

Scoring against Jim Ned were Caroline Chapman 1, Cheyenne Hebel 2, Braylee Clark 2, Mimi Ivy 2, and Avarie Myrick 3.

Scoring against Eula were Caroline Chapman 6, Hebel 2, Clark 2, Ivy 4, Myrick 1, and Madison Holson 2.

The team is 3-1 on the season.

6th Grade Girls

The sixth grade girls lost to Jim Ned #2 by a score of 24-3 and to Anson 19-10.

“This is our second time to play the Jim Ned #2 team,” said coach Leslie Neve. “They are very good and they play year-round.”

According to Neve, in the second game Albany kept it close with Anson until the final quarter.

“A couple of critical turnovers and fast breaks cost us several late points,” said Neve. “The girls continue to learn and improve. We just need to rebound better and not miss lay-ups or shots under the basket.”

6th Grade Boys

The Albany sixth grade boys lost 26-8 to Jim Ned #1, according to coach Terry Campbell.

The boys were also defeated by Stamford 26-18, but it was a much narrower margin than in their first bout with Stamford just last week.

The next round of games will take place this Saturday, Jan. 26, in both Anson and in Jim Ned.
