The youth fifth and sixth grade basketball teams will play their first games of the season on Saturday, Jan. 11, with three of the four Albany teams competing here, and the fifth grade boys playing in Hawley.

The local tournament will involve both the Albany High School main gym and the practice gym.

Games will take place every hour from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with two matches scheduled for each of the area teams playing in Albany this Saturday.

Teams from Albany, Jim Ned (-Tuscola), Clyde, Eula, Hawley, Stamford, and Merkel are in the league this year, and about half of those will start their season in Albany, while the rest begin in Hawley the same day.

Admission is $2 for adults, and $1 for students and senior citizens.

Sixth Grade Girls

Albany’s sixth grade girls are scheduled to face off against Eula’s sixth graders at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday in Albany’s main gym, and then have a second game later that morning in the same gym, taking on Jim Ned’s red team at 12:00 noon.

The sixth grade girls are coached by Clint Chapman.

Fifth Grade Girls

The Albany fifth grade girls start their season in the high school practice gym with a 10:00 a.m. bout with the Eula fifth graders.

The Albany team will also play Merkel at noon.

The Albany team is coached by Loree Lee.

Sixth Grade Boys

The sixth grade boys team, coached by John Tom Heatly, will play the Merkel sixth graders at 1:00 p.m. in the main gym. They will follow up with a 2:00 p.m. game against the Clyde Gold team.

Fifth Grade Boys

The Albany fifth grade boys, coached by Morgan Smith, will be in Hawley’s main gym for their first games.

They will play the Eula White team at 12:00 noon and Jim Ned at 1:00 p.m.

Future Games

Albany will host again on Jan. 18, with all the area boys teams playing here.

The girls will be in Merkel that day.

The following Saturday, Jim Ned and Merkel will host games, and on Feb. 1, games will be at Clyde and Jim Ned.

Team Photos

The Albany News plans to take team photos this Saturday in the lobby of the main gym.

The sixth grade girls will meet in the gym lobby at 9:20 a.m. on Jan. 11, followed by the fifth grade girls at 9:40 a.m.

Fifth grade boys are scheduled at 10:00 a.m. before they leave for their games at Hawley.

Tentatively, the sixth grade boys team will have photos taken at 12:30 p.m., although that may be moved to a time a little earlier in the day.

Payment slips will be sent home from school or practices this week.
