Albany senior Lute Wheelerbecam fourth member of his class to earn the chance to participate in athletics at the college level, signing Wednesday, Feb. 14 to play golf for North Central Texas College in Gainesville.

He joins classmates Adam Hill (Texas Tech football), Zane Waggoner (Mary Hardin-Baylor football) and Cole Read (Arlington Baptist baseball) to earn a chance to compete at the college level.

“I thinks it’s really neat to get to play what I like to do and get my college paid for,” Wheeler said. “I just thank all my Albany coaches and coach (Scott) Langley up at Gainesville for giving me the opportunity to do what I love.”

Wheeler, who was the district medalist as a freshman, has had the low score for the Lions at state the last two years. He made his first 2024 appearance Monday, Feb. 26, at the Hawley tournament after helping the Lions basketball team reach the second round of the playoffs.

In choosing NCTC, Wheeler said it was a case of finding a good fit. Men’s golf was added to the NCTC athletic program in September with 2024 being its first spring season.
