It took two trips over three days, butAlbany track and field athletes managed to get in a full meetlastweekatClyde’sGolden Shoe Relays.

The Lions and Lady Lions make their final outing before the District 10-2A meet Friday, March 29 when they host the Roaring Lion Relays. The district meet will be Thursday, April 4 at Cisco.

The Golden Shoe Relays began Thursday, March 21, but competition was cut short by weather. Teams returned to Clyde Saturday, March 23 to complete the meet.

Albany finished sixth in the team standings of both varsity divisions. The boys scored 55 points, while the girls totaled 21. The JV boys finished fifth with 62 points.

Themeetsawreturningstate medalistsAdam Hill and Kiana Roberson compete in their primary events for the first time this spring. Both have battled injuries.

Hill, who had been limited to field events, won both hurdles races in his first attempt. The reigning 300 hurdles state champion, who also has two silvermedalsinthe110hurdles, ran 14.60 seconds in the 110s and 39.94 in the 300s.

“Adam’s times were better than anything he ran last year until regional,” Lions coach Rod Brittingsaid.“Todothatthefirst time out was pretty encouraging to see. Hopefully, he can continue to whittle that down.”

Hill ran 14.36 and 38.75 at state last year. His margins of victory at Clyde were 4.37 seconds in the 110s and 2.82 seconds in the 300s.

Roberson finished second in the discus at 124 feet, 2 inches, but was held out of the shot put.

“WeweregoingtohaveKiana compete in the shot if discus camefirsttogetherloosenedup, but it didn’t,” Lady Lions coach Lauren Peacock said. “She’s still not able to get all the way through on the shot put. We’re still battling that condition.”

For the boys, Luke Marshall wonthepolevault, andLanxton Viertel placed fourth in both throwingevents.MasonMcCloy was fourth in the pole vault and JonathanCoodywassixthinthe 3200. The Lions finished third in the 1600 relay and fourth in the 800 relay.

For the Lady Lions, Ashlyn Miller won the girls 400 and placed fifth in the high jump, while Avery Everitt was sixth in the 300 hurdles.

“They both competed well,” Peacock said. “That was a big meet, and the competition was tough. Avery was right where she was the week before as far ashertimegoes. We’rehopingto drop a second or two this week.”

Most of the JV boys scoring came from relays, with Albany secondinthe400relayandthird in both the 800 and 1600.

Individually, Jack Nail won the100,TonyWheelerwasthird in 300 hurdles, Wesley Gleitz was fourth in shot put, and Britton Farmer was fifth in the 200.

Roaring Lion Relays Albany’s home meet will begin at 9:00 a.m. Friday with the 3200. Field events will start at 9:30 a.m. with running events starting at 1:30 p.m.

The order of competition will be varsity girls, JV boys, and varsity boys.

“This is where I tend to put kidsintwoorthreeotherevents because we’re still working on getting in shape,” Britting said. “It’s our last competition scenario. I want them to have decent marks. It’s a matter of understanding that district is what’s important.”

Peacock will have close to her full lineup with freshman Zayne Lefevre cleared to compete for the first time, while other team members are clear of other obligations. Tatum Grady, Chey’Anne Weaver, and Melanie Figueroa all competed at Clyde and will be available.

“They’ve missed a few meets with stock shows or band,” Peacock said. “We’re finally getting everyone back at one time. The timing is good to build up for district.”

Peacock said having Lefevre healthy opens up several possibilities.

“Having Zayne back, we may even try to throw a relay together if we can just for training purposes this week,” she said. “That will be fun to get a little competition for them in a different area.”
