The Moran Bulldogs saw a slight increase in numbers as the second week of preseason football practice began with eight players on hand.

“I had one come in Monday from Breckenridge that I’m going to try to get eligible to play,” head coach John Hughes said. “If I get him, we’ll have nine, so we’re about where I figured we were going to be.”

Moran wraps up its second week Thursday, Aug. 10 (today) with a three-team scrimmage at Trent.

Hughes said the first week of practice, which culminated Saturday, Aug. 5, with a Midnight Madness workout, went as well as he could have hoped.

“We came out with normal bumps and bruises, normal soreness,” he said. “Midnight Madness went really well, and we got a lot of good work out of it. I saw some good stuff and saw some stuff we still need to work on, but all in all, the first week went really well.”

The Bulldogs will get a look at other opponents at 6:00 p.m. Thursday, joining Eden and Trent.

Hughes said seeing two opponents offers a chance to face more situations.

Moran will host a four-team scrimmage Saturday, Aug. 19.

Volleyball

The Lady Bulldogs were shorthanded with just five players on Saturday for a multi-team scrimmage at Munday, but coach Jo Hise said the team still got some much-needed work.

“The girls adjusted quickly to a different defense, learned how to communicate on the court so we could get holes covered,” she said. “I’ve got a new mix with only three that have ever played together.”

With six players on hand, Moran opened its season Tuesday, Aug. 8, at Rotan. Results will be reported next week.

Hise announced an addition to the schedule with Moran visiting the Eastland JV at 4:30 p.m. Aug. 18.

All matches through the second week of September will be on the road as work on installing a new gym floor commenced this week. The first scheduled home match is Tuesday, Sept. 19 against Rotan.

Cross Country

Cross country workouts continue with girls from volleyball taking part.

“Right now, we’re conditioning,” Hise said. “I’ve got some junior high boys interested, but we just handed out equipment Monday.”
