Track teams host district meet today

Local tracksters continued to improve times and distances last week at the local meet in preparation for the District 8-2A meet set for Thursday (today).

Albany is hosting the district meet. Field events are slated to begin with running preliminaries at 8:30 a.m. , followed by field events starting at 12:00 noon. Running finals are scheduled at 5:00 p.m., with the top four places advancing to the area meet.

District teams that will be competing at the meet include Albany, Cross Plains, Haskell, Hawley, Roscoe Collegiate, and Stamford.

The Albany varsity teams both finished in fourth place at last week’s meet, with the girls tallying 62 points and the boys finishing with 60 points. The JV boys scored 46 points for fifth place.

“It felt good to have most of the guys compete this week after so many injuries,” boys coach Rod Britting said. “District is here now, so we will have to put together the best combinations for the relays that we can with a couple of guys still nursing injuries.”

The coach said that the mile relay performed well, winning the event with a time of 3:33.

“The mile relay was the best thing that happened on the boys side last week,” he said. “Blaine Kayga had a great lead-off leg and the rest of the guys never looked back.”

Girls coach Lauren Peacock said that the girls’ relays improved, with the mile relay dropping four seconds.

“All of our relays battled and competed well until the end,” she said. “As long as we can keep everyone healthy, we should have a solid group advance to the area meet. We don’t have a lot of depth, but we have some mentally tough girls who want to win.”

Senior Caroline Masters set a new personal record in the pole vault, clearing 10-6.

“All of the hard work that she put in during the off-season is paying off for her,” Peacock said.
