The Albany Lions and Lady Lions track and field teams hosted the Roaring Lion Relays on Thursday, March 23, in one of their final meets before district competition.

Albany athletes were competing Thursday, March 30 (today) at Clyde’s Golden Shoe Relays in their final tuneup before the District 10-2A meet,  scheduled for Thursday, April 6 at Cisco.

Lady Lions coach Ryder Peacock said having district teams Anson, Haskell, and Stamford in attendance at the local meet provided a hint of what to expect at district.

“We were able to see a couple of teams we haven’t seen this year and judge where we stack up in certain events,” he said. “The main thing is we’re trying to figure out what the best options are for our girls in terms of trying to get them to the next round.”

In the girls division, Albany placed fourth with 90 points.

Kiana Roberson set a school record of 138-0 in winning the discus and was second in the shot put. Melanie Figueroa was fourth in the discus.

Briley Tabor won the pole vault and Ella Webb won the 100 hurdles with Avery Everitt third. Everitt was also third in the 300 hurdles. Mimi Ivy was fourth in the triple jump.

In the relays, the 400 team of Webb, Tabor, Madison Parrott, and Ivy finished third. Parrott, Tabor, Ivy, and Gineveve Soders finished third in the 800 relay. Ivy, Webb, Soders, and Callan Edgar were fourth in the 1600 relay.

The Albany boys finished second in the team standings with 135 points. The Lions received contributions from a number of athletes who have been busy with other activities this spring.

Boys coach Rod Britting said the meet offered a chance to look at athletes in different events as he begins shaping the lineup for district.

“We’re looking at things and seeing what the numbers are,” he said. “We’ll put a pencil to it and see where we’re at. In the end, we’re going to try to put kids in a place where they can be competitive.”

The 1600 relay of Cason Fairchild, Samuel Rosas, London Fuentes, and Adam Hill won with a time of 3:31.61.

“We didn’t run that time until regional last year,” Britting said. “That was a good sign.”

The 800 relay of Fairchild, Jayce Tinkle, Tye Edgar, and Fuentes was second in 1:33.76.

Hill had personal-best times in winning both hurdles races. Hill ran 14.73 in the 110 hurdles, 0.06 seconds faster than his time at state last year, and 40.32 in the 300 hurdles. In both races, he had just one opponent.

“Adam ran a personal best with no one around him,” Britting said. “I hope he does even better with competition. He’s running really well right now.”

Edgar cleared 13-0 to lead a 1-2-3 sweep in the pole vault with Luke Marshall and Jayden Lucas.

Wyatt Windham won the high jump at 6-0 and was fifth in the 400.

Cole Chapman won the triple jump and finished second in the long jump by a half inch.

Lanxton Viertel took second in the shot put and fourth in the discus.

Samuel Rosas was third in the 800 with Marshall third in the 100.

In the JV boys division, Albany was third with 117 points, winning four events. Huffman Heatly earned gold medals in the 400 and 1600, Mason McLoy led a 1-2-3 sweep in the pole vault and the foursome of Breylon Billington, Jaxson Street, Branson Beal, and Calhan Fairchild won the 400 relay and placed second in the 800 relay.

Billington and Woods Peterson followed McCloy in the pole vault.

Albany also took three places in the triple jump with Beal second, Aaden Mendez fifth and Cade Fairchild sixth. Mendez added a sixth-place finish in the long jump.

The Lions had two entries place in the 300 hurdles, 200 and 1600. In the hurdles, Calhan Fairchild was third and Billington fourth. In the sprint, Beal was third with Peterson sixth. In the distance race, Kolt Koemel, who was also fifth in the discus, finished third behind Heatly.
