Track teams compete at 2 meets

Albany track and field athletes combined for 10 first place finishes last week at meets at Anson and Eastland.

Both meets were held Thursday, March 3. The start of  the season was delayed a week after weather forced the cancellation of the first meet at Breckenridge.

“We usually get a late start anyway because of basketball,” boys coach Rod Britting said. “We don’t really get to spend a lot of time on the track before the season. We’re just now starting to run, so we’ll usually peak a little later.”

At Eastland, Luke Ivy claimed three gold medals, winning triple jump at 42-4½, the long jump at 20-2¾, and the 400 meters in 54.81 seconds.

Sarah Cotter won the girls high jump, clearing 5-4.

Ivy and Cotter competed at the meet instead of Anson to facilitate their participation in other sports.

At Anson, the Albany boys finished third in the team standings with 70 points. Tye Edgar cleared 13 feet to win the pole vault, and Brooks Neece won the discus with a throw of 108 feet, four inches.

In the girls division, Albany scored 62 points with just five athletes to place sixth. Ella Webb won both hurdles races, running 18.52 seconds in the 100 hurdles and 55.00 in the 300 hurdles. Kiana Roberson won the discus with a toss of 87-4½ in addition to finishing second in the shot put. Briley Tabor cleared 8 feet to win the pole vault.

Albany finished second in the JV boys division with 91 points. Event winners were Jayce Tinkle in the 200 and 800, Cason Fairchild in the 100, and Jace Little in the pole vault.

Albany track teams will be in Jim Ned today (March 10).
