Tennis team prepares for district tournament

By Melinda L. Lucas

The Albany High School tennis team got its final tune-up prior to the district tournament with a partial lineup involved in practice games Monday, April 14 against Abilene High School JV players.

The local athletes will report next Monday and Tuesday, April 21-22 for the district tournament at Abilene’s Rose Park Tennis Center.

Coach M.J. Reneau said scores were not recorded at Monday’s matches, nor at the Vernon quad meet on April 8.

“In Vernon, we got in an all-day practice, and we just mixed it up with different kinds of sets,” she said. “It was great for us because we saw a couple of teams that would be at our regional tournament. It was a beautiful day, and every player got at least three matches.”

In addition to Vernon and Albany, there were teams from Seymour and Electra at the April 8 meet.

Monday’s practice with Abilene High was also “nothing official,” with no brackets.

“We went late in the day, so the kids didn’t miss any school,” the coach said.

Reneau commented that the team is meeting its goals so far, and she anticipates that several athletes will advance out of the district tournament.

“It looks really promising right now with a solid group of kids,” Reneau said. “They’re coming together at the right time.”

Junior High Schedule

Albany’s junior high players are on the courts almost daily getting ready for their district tournament at Rose Park in a couple of weeks.

The boys district date was changed to Friday, May 2, with the girls following on Monday, May 5.

The junior high teams are playing intrasquad scrimmages until then, with a dual meet against Zephyr cancelled, Reneau said.
