The Albany tennis team came away with nine medals, including five gold, Tuesday, Feb. 28 in a two-team competition with Hawley at Rose Park Tennis Center in Abilene.

Albany will host its tournament Thursday, March 9 (today). Coach M.J. Reneau said action will get underway at 8:30 a.m.

Albany engaged in bracket play against Hawley with players competing in both singles and doubles.

“Everybody played a doubles bracket in the morning and a singles bracket in the evening,” Reneau said. “That counted as two tournaments for us. There was lots of good tennis, and we earned lots of medals.”

In girls singles, Sidney Russell took first place, Jaci Chapman finished second, and Abi Hale was third.

Cade Fairchild won boys singles, while Cason Fairchild and London Fuentes won boys doubles, with Cade Fairchild and Jaxson Street finishing third.

In girls doubles, Chapman and Ella Webb placed first with Brooklyn Abbate and Chloe Daugherty winning the consolation bracket.

In mixed doubles, Russell and Brayden Watson were first, with Abi Hale and Jake Hale second.

Match scores were not available.

Reneau said the format for today’s event will depend on the number of entries, which were still coming in at press time.

“Depending on how many entries we have, we’ll either do a round-robin or a bracket,” she said. “For instance, we could have a bracket in mixed doubles and round robin in girls singles.”
