Moran alumus and current Hardin-Simmons University senior Sydney TenCate recently won gold at the American Southwest Conference 2019 Cross Country Championships, breaking an HSU women’s 6K record that she set just last month and earning a spot for her and her team at the NCAA Division III South/Southeast Regional Championships in Memphis, Tennessee on Nov. 16.

TenCate, who already set the HSU women’s cross country record of 18:35 in the 5K back in 2017, added to her resume, breaking the 6K HSU record Oct. 19 with a time of 22:59.5 at the Bob Libby Invitational, where she placed second on the medal stand.

The criminal justice major won the ASC 2019 Cross Country Championships held in Abilene at the Abilene Christian University cross country course last Saturday, Nov. 2, in 22:29, setting not only a personal and school record, but also a new ASC women’s record in the 6K.

TenCate’s first place finish, coupled with teammates in eighth, ninth, 10th, and 14th places, propelled HSU to the team championship at the ASC meet, qualifying the team for the upcoming NCAA regional contest.

HSU scored 42 points, followed by UT Dallas with 65 in second, and a tie for third between Mary Hardin-Baylor and McMurry, both with 87.

Career Awards

TenCate was named to the first team all-ASC for the fourth time, and she was chosen the 2019 ASC Women’s All-Conference Individual Medalist.

In additon, TenCate was the ASC Cross Country Runner of the Week six times in 2019 and 14 times during her running career.

In previous years, TenCate was fourth at the ASC Cross Country Championships in 2018, runner up in 2017, and fourth in 2016.

She won ASC Newcomer of the Year in Women’s Cross Country in 2016.

The distance runner has also represented HSU in track and field competition.

She won the 10,000 meter and 5,000 meter races, and came in fourth in the 1,500 meter and 800 meter at the ASC track and field championships last April on her way to being selected the 2019 ASC High Point Athlete in Track and Field.

Other ASC championships won by TenCate include the 1,500 meter, 5,000 meter, and 10,000 meter, as well as Outstanding Female Track Athlete of the Championship in 2018.

TenCate owns HSU indoor track records in the 1,000 meter, 1 mile, 3,000 meter, 5,000 meter, and distance medley relay, and the university’s women’s outdoor track records in the 1 mile, 5,000 meter, and 10,000 meter races.

In high school at Moran, TenCate went to state in both track and cross country her senior year.

TenCate is the daughter of Delisa and Steven TenCate of Moran, and grandaughter of Bonnie TenCate, also of Moran.
