The Albany Lions athletic program begins the final week of its summer conditioning program Monday, July 18, while the Lady Lions return after a two-week break for two more weeks of conditioning work.

The final week of boys summer sessions will be from 7:00 a.m. to about 8:30 a.m. Monday through Thursday, July 18-21. Workouts include weight lifting, agility drills, and conditioning. Boys will also conducting one-hour skill sessions at 5:00 p.m. Monday and Wednesday.

Lions head football coach Denney Faith said it is imperative that football candidates be prepared for the start of preseason practice on Aug. 1.

“With a week left, if guys are not coming to workouts, they need to be doing stuff on their own,” Faith said. “They need to try to get themselves a little bit acclimated to the heat and start getting fluids in their bodies, because it’s going to be hot, grueling, and taxing on their bodies.”

Girls workouts will resume  Monday, July 18 and continue each Monday through Thursday  through July 28. Daily sessions will be 9:00-10:00 a.m.

Volleyball will have two more sessions of sport-specific instruction, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Thursdays, including July 14 (today) and July 21.

Summer workouts are regulated by UIL rules.

Preseason practices for high school football and volleyball begin Monday, Aug. 1. Junior high sports cannot hold practices until school starts.

Faith said a letter containing all necessary paperwork has been sent to prospective football players.

“If anyone is planning to play football and didn’t get a letter, they can go ahead and get ahold of me, and I’ll get the paperwork that they need to them,” Faith said.

Football equipment will be issued to seniors on  Monday, July 25, one week before the start of practice. Juniors will follow on Tuesday, July 26, with sophomores on Wednesday, and freshmen on Thursday. Equipment distribution will be at 9:00 a.m. each day. Faith said players unable to attend at that time may come later in the day.
