Summer conditioning continues

Local junior high and high school students are continuing to take advantage of morning strength and conditioning training at the high school.

The supervised training sessions will be available for three more weeks at 7:00 a.m. on Monday through Thursday, ending Thursday, July 19.

Students have the opportunity to keep in shape over the summer through a variety of weight training, conditioning, and agility drills.

The sessions are open to both males and females regardless of which sports they plan to participate in during the next school year.

Students will also have a workout regiment posted in the recently renovated weight room at the school if they are not able to attend the supervised sessions. The weight room will be open from 7:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Monday though Friday.

Workouts supervised by the coaching staff are limited to six weeks of summer training, according to UIL regulations. Skills specific to a particular sport can not be taught, but general conditioning can be incorporated to keep students in shape.

The staff said that the weight room will remaining open for individual use until the start of school in August.

The weight room was completely remodeled on the inside early in the year including all new equipment.

Coach Denney Faith also said that any athlete who didn’t have a physical exam conducted during the last two weeks of school must have one completed before they can participate in practices that start in August.

Physicals are available at the Shackelford County Health Clinic. Forms are available from the coaches or at the clinic.

Students who did not have an exam at school will have to pay for one on their own.

“It is important that all athletes keep in shape over the summer, so we are attempting to provide opportunities for them to do that,” Faith said.
