Sports camps continue with basketball

While one sports camp was held this week for local youth, several more are still planned over the summer to help kids stay busy.

Basketball and pole vault camps are set for next week for both boys and girls, with a volleyball camp for girls to follow the week after. Tennis and cheerleading camps are also planned later.

Basketball Camp

A two-day basketball camp for both boys and girls is planned for Monday and Tuesday, June 3-4 at the local gym.

Sessions will be divided by age, with students entering grades K-3 next year meeting from 8:30 a.m. until 9:45 a.m. Students entering grades 4-9 will meet at 10:00 until 11:45 a.m. both days.

The cost of the camp is $25 per student.

The sessions will be conducted by head girls basketball coach Tate Thompson and head boys basketball coach Ryder Peacock.

Pole Vault Camp

A camp for beginning pole vaulters will be held on June 3-4 from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.

The camp will be conducted by coach Rod Britting and will be for students entering grades 7-9 in the fall.

The cost of the two-day camp is $85.

Volleyball Camp

The 2019 version of the Albany Volleyball Camp is set for June 10-12, with coach M.J. Vickers Reneau heading up the instruction.

The sessions will be divided into three age groups. Students entering grades 1-3 will start at 8:00 a.m. and continue until 9:30 a.m. Students in grades 4-6 will meet from 10:30 a.m. until 12:00 noon.

Older students going into grades 7-9 will meet from 1:00 p.m. until 3:30 p.m.

Forms for the camp were available at the grade school and junior high. Registration and payment is due by June 3 to guarantee a camp T-shirt.

Cost of the camp is $25, including the shirt.

Tennis Camp

New this summer is a tennis camp for students entering kindergarten through ninth grade.

Dates for the camp are June 17-19, with students able to select the numbers of days to attend. The cost to attend all three days is $30, or campers can select specific days for $10 per day. A discount is available for families with two children attending at $50 total, or three children for $80.

The camp will be divided into two sessions, with K-3 students meeting at 8:30 a.m., followed by grades 4-9 at 10:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.

The camp will be instructed by Lisa Russell, with all proceeds benefiting the Albany tennis program.

“There is a need for some new rackets for kids to use, as well as some improvements to the courts that are needed,” Russell said.

Cheer Camp

The annual Albany Cheer Camp is being planned for July 29-31, according to sponsor Lindsey Vaughn.

Cost of the camp will by $45, but discounts are available for parents who have more than one student attending. Registration forms will be made available in July to sign up.

Participants will be divided by age groups, with children ages three through sixth grade eligible to attend the camp from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. each day.

Participants will be taught group routines and will perform at the Hamburger Supper in August hosted by the Athletic Booster Club that kicks off the next sports year.
