Shackelford Co. runners help HSU win conference

The Hardin Simmons Cowgirls recently won the American Southwest Conference Track and Field Championship thanks in a large part to Shackelford County graduates Baley Green and Sydney Ten Cate.

HSU senior Sydney Ten Cate graduated from Moran, while college freshman Baley Green is from Albany.

Ten Cate garnered 30 points at the meet, and Baley earned 13 points on her own and another eight as part of the mile relay team. Between the two they helped tally 51 points toward the HSU team winning total of 224.83.

Sydney Ten Cate

At the close of the championship meet in Abilene last month Sydney Ten Cate was named the 2019 ASC Track and Field high point athlete.

In addition, for the second year in a row she was picked as the ASC outstanding track athlete.

The HSU senior has been selected for the ASC All-Conference team all four years of her college career.

During the 2019 champions meet held at HSU on April 19 and 20, Ten Cate won the 10,000 meter run with a time of 41:17.97 and ran the 5,000 meter run in 19:19.89 to claim gold in that event also.

Ten Cate was fourth in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:34.41, and fourth in the 1,500 meter run in 5:21.50.

Earlier this year, she claimed gold in the 5,000 meter run at Texas Lutheran University’s D3 Challenge, and took fifth place in the mile.

She won the 5,000 meter run at the HSU Invitational in Feb.

The senior holds the ASC Women’s Championship record in the 10,000 meter run, when she crossed the tape in 39:49.21 last year.

At last year’s ASC championship meet Ten Cate won gold in the 10,000 meter run, placed third in the 1,500 meter run in 5:16.45, and was a member of the women’s 4x400 relay that took bronze in 4:17.62.

In 2017 she won the 1,500, the 5,000, and the 10,000 meter runs, placing fourth overall in the championships.

The distance runner finished second in the 800 meter run, 1,500 meter run, and 3,000 meter steeplechase her freshman year at HSU and took sixth in the 400 meter dash.

The criminal justice major also runs cross country for HSU.

She is the daughter of Delisa and Steven Ten Cate.

Baley Green

Green, who qualified for the Texas UIL state track meet her freshman, sophomore, and senior years of high school, is a sprinter on the HSU track team.

“In Albany I ran in whatever events the coaches told me to run in,” Green said. “Here I was recruited as a 400 runner.”

Green is a member of the HSU 4x400 relay team that came in sixth at the UCO Open in January and took the gold medal at the Texas Lutheran University D3 Challenge in March.

Green also runs in the 400 meter hurdles and 400 meter dash, and placed fifth in hurdles at the East Texas Invitational in April.

The sprinter continued to run well at the ASC Championship meet.

Green was one of the members of the HSU 4x400 relay team that finished in 4:03.16 to claim the silver.

She also placed sixth in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:01.78.

Green had the fastest qualifying time in the 400 meter hurdles 1:07.84, then shaved off almost a half second in the finals to win the race in 1:07.40.

She was named to the 2019 ASC All-Conference team.

Green is the daughter of Jessica Bryan and Jake Green.

She is currently majoring in fitness, recreation and sports management, but is still looking at various career options, including art.

“Hardin Simmons is a really good school,” Green said. “The small size makes it easier to get to know other students and even professors. The track team gave me an instant place to belong, and I plan to be here again next year.”
