The Albany Lions and Lady Lions cross country runners had their final tuneup before district last week at the Anson meet, and coach Ginger Norton is optimistic about having more than one regional qualifier.

The District 10-2A meet was held Wednesday, Oct. 12 at Anson with the top three teams and the top 10 individuals advancing. Results were not available at press time and will be reported next week.

The Region II-2A meet will be run Monday, Oct. 24 at Lynn Creek Park at Joe Pool Lake in Grand Prairie. The top four teams and top 10 individuals not on a qualifying team advance to the state meet.

On Wednesday, Oct. 5 at Anson, three Albany runners were among the top 10 finishers from 10-2A schools.

In the varsity boys division, which had 85 entries, Jonathan Coody finished 20th overall in 20 minutes, 20 seconds. Coody was a regional qualifier last year as a freshman.

“Jonathan was the sixth runner in our district and would have placed if he had been running against the district runners only,” Norton said. “He has a shot to qualify for regionals if he will run his race. Competition for the boys at district will be Hawley and Haskell followed by Anson.”

Other boys were Brayden Watson (52nd, 23:33), Jayce Tinkle (64th, 25:00), and Landon Kreitler (78th, 27:07).

In the varsity girls race,  Briley Tabor and Sidney Russell both crossed the finish line in 14:55 with Tabor placing 27th and Russell 28th.

“They both would have placed in the top 10 in our district,” Norton said. “They have a shot to qualify if they will compete like they know how in their race. Our competition will be the Haskell, Hawley, Hamlin, and Anson girl teams.”

Also running in the varsity girls race, with 103 runners, was Maci Hatchett. She finished 74th in 16:20.

In the junior varsity girls division, which had 42 runners, Avery Everitt earned Albany’s lone medal for the meet, finishing fourth in 16:30. Myleigh Leveridge was 14th in 17:57 and Jaci Chapman was 30th in 20:21.
