Albany News

By Donnie A. Lucas

The two rounds of the District 5 baseball tournament scheduled to  be played in Albany on Monday were moved due to excessive rainfall.

The Albany Reds, a majors team, was supposed to play Clyde here on Monday, but the game was moved to Winters on Tuesday at 8:00 p.m.

Details of the game were not available at press time, but the Reds won 9-7 and advanced in the bracket and will move on to the next round. Specific information was not available due to the number of changes in the tournament times and locations caused by the rain.

Local league president Paul Hamilton said that the tournament was scheduled at several locations, but a number of sites were not playable due to the weather.

Albany’s Raiders, another major league team, played Snyder in their first round last Saturday, losing 10-5. The tournament is a single-elimination event.

The Reds and the Raiders both posted 5-4 records among local teams, but the Reds took first place because they defeated the Raiders two out of three meetings during the regular season.

The Oilers finished in third place with a 3-6 record.

Machine Pitch Tourney

Albany is once again hosting one of the locations for the District 5 Machine Pitch tournament on Saturday, weather permitting.

Hamilton said that Albany is fielding one team of eight- and nine-year-olds, mostly selected from the three local minor league teams.

The number of games that will be played here on Saturday was not set, but Hamilton added that the Albany team would definitely play here on Saturday. Exact times were not available.

Albany has hosted one of the District 5 tournament locations over the last five years, except in 2020 when the tournament wasn’t held due to COVID-19.

The local league has two fields available, including both a little league and intermediate field that can be used for the tournament.
