Moran teams to play in May

The Moran Lady Bulldogs’ first basketball outings of 2023 resulted in a pair of lopsided road losses last week, including their district opener.

The Lady Bulldogs returned to action Tuesday, Jan. 10 when they hosted Rising Star for their first district home game. Results will be reported next week.

Moran visits May on Friday, Jan. 13 as part of a doubleheader that will include the boys district opener.

On Tuesday, Jan. 3 at Olney, the Lady Bulldogs lost 41-2 with all their scoring coming on free throws.  Alyssa Allred and Samantha Hinkle each made one.

Kacenda Thompkins had 12 rebounds.

Class 2A Olney led 10-0 after the first quarter and 25-1 at the half. Moran finished 0 for 21 from the floor and lost 32 turnovers.

On Friday, Jan. 6, the Lady Bulldogs dropped their District 13-1A opener 84-7 at Cross Plains, which is ranked No. 5 in the state in Class 1A by both TABC and TGCA. This time, all Moran’s scoring came from the field as the Lady Bulldogs attempted just two free throws.

Emily Murk hit a 3-pointer to lead Moran in scoring, while Neveah Huskey and Allred each had two points. Allred and Thompkins each had six rebounds.

Boys Basketball

The Bulldogs played just one game last week, falling 74-15 at Olney in their final game before starting district play.

Scoring details were not available.

Moran visits May on Friday, Jan. 13, following consecutive open dates.

Junior High

Moran’s junior high teams took the court for the first time in nearly a month because of the semester break, hosting Cross Plains on Monday, Jan. 9.

In the A game (combined seventh and eighth grade), Moran lost 43-17. Garrett Hamilton scored nine points to lead Moran, with Landon Moreno scoring eight. Each hit a 3-pointer.

In the B game (sixth grade) Moran lost 36-8. Andy Barron scored six points for the Bulldogs, with Rob Williams adding two.

The games were the first for Moran since Dec. 12.

The junior high teams return to action Monday, Jan. 16 with road games at Rising Star.
