Moran’s basketball season is winding down, and although they have lost most of their district games, all Moran coaches report that their players are improving, learning, playing better, and coming together as a team, even if the scores don’t reflect it.

The junior high teams will close out the season next Monday night when they host Strawn to games starting at 6:00 p.m.

The Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs travel to Eula this Friday, Feb. 7 to take on the district leaders. Both the Pirates and the Lady Pirates are currently undefeated in district play.

The Bulldogs will host Ranger in a make-up game on Saturday, Feb. 8. The match, originally scheduled for Jan. 31, was postponed due to illness.

Tuesday, Feb. 11 Moran will travel to Strawn for high school games starting at 6:00 p.m. It will be the final game of the season for the Lady Bulldogs.

The varsity boys will host Gordon on Feb. 14 before they close out their season on Tuesday, Feb. 18 in Ranger.

Lady Bulldogs

The high school girls started the second round of district play with a 37-21 loss in Gordon on Tuesday, Jan. 28.

“We played great, and I’m proud of my team and what they have accomplished this year,” said coach John Hughes. “The girls put up a huge fight like they always do. We just couldn’t get the shots to fall when we needed them to.”

Scoring for Moran were Johnnie Hise 11, Reshaley Schafer 9, and November Meredith 1.

The Lady ’Dawgs continued on the road on Friday, Jan. 31, pairing off with Ranger at 6:00 p.m.

“We lost another close one 33-26, falling to 3-20 overall, and 0-7 in district,” said Hughes. “Again, we just could not get the shots to fall for us. I know that it gets frustrating for the girls, but they have continued to improve over the course of the season.”

Scoring for Moran were Schafer 12, Hise 5, Dariann Hawley 3, Meredith 2, Hannah Rogers 2, Chloe Hendricks 1, and Emily Murk 1.

The girls’ game with Baird on Tuesday, Feb. 4 was started an hour earlier than normal due to forecasted winter weather. Details of the game were not available at press time, and will be reported next week.

Junior High

The junior high Lady Bulldogs played Baird on Monday, Jan. 27. The visiting Lady Cubs beat Moran 39-11.

“The girls fought hard, and they are slowly gaining confidence in their abilities,” said coach Elizabeth Martin. “They worked as a team on Monday. I’m very proud of the progress they have made this season.”

The junior high boys also fell to Baird on Jan. 27.

“The Bulldogs came up short against the Bears 21-13,” said coach Matthew Hise.

Scoring for Moran were Toby Eason 6, A.J. Hebel 4, Chace Murk 2, and Ellis Hise 1.

Moran lost on the road in Eula 63-11 on Monday, Feb. 3.
