By Sam Waller

After facing five teams in two scrimmages over the last two weeks, the Moran Bulldogs have the luxury of facing one team at a time as the 2023 season begins.

Moran opens its season at 7:00 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25 when Lohn visits Bulldog Field.

The Bulldogs hosted a four-team scrimmage Saturday, Aug. 19, with Lue-ders-Avoca, Azle Christian, and Temple Holy Trinity.

In the scrimmage, teams worked on opposite sides of the 40-yard line for two segments with a 20-minute running clock. Moran got in another 10-minute segment to face all three visiting teams.

“We got 50 minutes in, and it went really well,” Bulldogs coach John Hughes said. “We looked really good.”

With Caleb York unavailable because of family obligations, Ellis Hise did most of the work on offense. Ethan Boykin also scored a touchdown for the Bulldogs.

On defense, Moran came up with several fourth-down stops.

The Moran Lady Bulldogs got in two more road matches last week as work on their home floor continues.

Moran began this week Tuesday, Aug. 22 with a match at Roscoe. Results will be reported next week.

“We’ve made progress in learning our rotation, getting where we’re supposed to be, and trusting each other,” Lady Bulldogs coach Jo Hise said. “We’re learning how to play ball together.”

The Lady Bulldogs will spend Thursday-Saturday, Aug. 24-26, at the Abilene TLCA tournament.

On Tuesday, Aug. 15, Moran lost 14-25, 12-25, 7-25 at Gustine. On Friday, Aug. 18, the Lady Bulldogs dropped a 13-25, 9-25, 16-25 decision to the Eastland JV.
