Moran girls pick up win

The Moran Lady Bulldogs picked up their second District 13-1A victory last week to split two home games.

The Lady Bulldogs lost 68-26 to Eula on Tuesday, Jan. 18, but held off Rising Star 42-38 on Friday, Jan. 21.

Meanwhile, the Moran boys team lost 86-30 to Eula, then fell agonizingly short in a 47-45 loss to Rising Star.

The Bulldogs played at Cross Plains on Monday, Jan. 24 in a game postponed from Friday, Jan. 14. Results were not available at press time and will be reported next week.

Both Moran teams played at May on Tuesday, Jan. 25, with the girls starting the second half of district play. Details will be reported next week. On Friday, Jan. 28, Moran will host Baird.

Girls Basketball

In the 68-26 loss to Eula, the Lady Bulldogs trailed 29-2 after one quarter and 50-8 at halftime.

Hannah Noble scored 11 points to lead Moran, with Johnnie Hise adding nine and Emily Murk 6. Hise had a team-high six rebounds.

In the 42-38 victory over Rising Star, the Lady Bulldogs overcame a 6-4 first-quarter deficit to lead 25-16 at halftime, then held on in the second half for the win.

Noble scored 17 points, and Hise added 13, going 5 of 6 on free throws, to lead Moran. Alli Scott had six points with Murk scoring four and Julianna Cottle two.

Scott led the rebounding effort with seven, while Murk had six. Noble and Scott each had four steals, and Hannah Rogers had three.

Boys Basketball

In the 86-30 loss to Eula, the Moran boys fell behind 20-8 in the first quarter and 44-13 by halftime.

Arren Hawley led the Bulldogs with 20 points. Tyler Waddell scored five. Connor Hail added three and Ellis Hise two.

In the 47-45 loss to Rising Star, foul trouble proved to be Moran’s undoing. Three players fouled out, leaving the Bulldogs to finish the game with four on the court.

Rising Star finished 10 of 37 at the line, while Moran was 4 of 12.

The Bulldogs led 12-7 after one quarter, but the Wildcats rallied to tie the game 19-19 at the half and outscored Moran by a point in each of the final two periods.

Hawley finished with 23 points. Caleb York added nine, and Cotten Campbell had seven. Hail scored four points and Hise two.

Junior High

Moran’s junior high teams faced a quick turnaround after last week’s games were moved to Thursday, Jan. 20, because of the Martin Luther King holiday. On Monday, Jan. 24, Moran played at Cross Plains.

The Moran girls lost 16-12 to Baird. Ashlyn Crawford, Cassandra Mendez, and Kacenda Thompkins all scored four points.

The Lady Bulldogs lost 28-3 to Cross Plains on Monday. LeAnna Sykes scored two points and Thompkins scored one.

The Moran boys lost 48-0 to Baird on Monday. The Bulldogs dropped a 69-14 decision to Cross Plains on Monday. Landon Moreno scored all 14 points for Moran.
