Moran FFA celebrates with lunch, animals

Moran FFA members and their advisor Matthew Hise hosted two special events recently during national FFA week, and the entire school celebrated the week with daily dress up days.

Monday was camouflage day, Tuesday was dress as your favorite farmer, Wednesday was bring your favorite stuffed farm animal to school, Thursday was dress as your favorite cowboy, and Friday was wear Blue and Gold.

“Our FFA officers sent out invitations to farmers around Moran to invite them to a hamburger lunch on Wednesday, Feb. 20, at our Moran ISD Activity Center,” said MISD administrative assistant Jeannie TenCate. “Our FFA officers and Matthew Hise prepared the hamburgers and fixings.”

The Moran FFA officers also put together a farm animal exhibit on Friday.

“They had rabbits, chickens, a goat, a lamb, and a calf on display for the elementary students as well as the junior high students to come by and ask questions about or pet,” said TenCate.

The FFA officers weren’t the only students working outside of the classroom last week.

“We purchased new wood shavings for our playground,” said TenCate. “Our students volunteered to help spread it out.”

Tyson Dever

Yesterday, Feb. 27, Moran sixth through 12th grade students traveled to Baird for a presentation about distracted driving given by motivational speaker Tyson Dever.

Dever was only 22 years old when he became paralyzed from the waist down after a distracted driver in a 33-ton cement mixer ran over his sports car.

Dever tries to educate Texas students about the dangers of distracted driving before they get behind the wheel.

TxDOT has funded Dever’s presentation to schools through a program called Teens in the Driver Seat.
