Moran basketball season ends

The Moran Lady Bulldogs wrapped up the girls basketball season Tuesday, Feb. 7, falling just short in a comeback bid at Baird.

Meanwhile, the Moran boys basketball team entered its final game of the season this week.

The Moran boys closed the season Tuesday, Feb. 14 at home against Rising Star. Senior night activities were held before the game.

Girls Basketball

At Baird, the Lady Bulldogs lost 37-31 despite a big comeback in the second half.

Baird led 28-12 at halftime, but was held to just three field goals in the second half. Moran shaved four points off the deficit in the third quarter before getting the margin to single digits in the fourth.

Alli Scott led all scorers with 19 points for the Lady Bulldogs, getting 12 in the second half as Moran rallied. Alyssa Allred added six points with Samantha Hinkle scoring three, LeAnna Sikes two, and Emily Murk one.

Boys Basketball

On Saturday, Feb. 4, the Bulldogs lost 59-11 to May in a game delayed by weather. Moran was within four at 8-4 in the first quarter, but May posted a 36-3 edge over the middle two quarters.

Tyler Waddell had three points for Moran. Connor Hail, Zech Henderson, Caleb York, and Ellis Hise each scored two.

On Tuesday, Feb. 7, the Bulldogs lost 68-35 at Baird. Moran was within three at 15-12 in the first quarter before being outscored 39-12 over the next two quarters.

Hise had a season-high 20 points to lead the Bulldogs. York added six points, followed by Chase Murk with three. Waddell and Henderson scored two each, while Hail and Cotten Campbell each scored one.

On Friday, Feb. 10, Moran made its final road trip, falling 55-22 at Cross Plains. The Buffaloes jumped out to a 14-5 lead in the first quarter and led 29-7 at halftime.

Hise scored seven points with York adding six and Hail five. Waddell and Murk added two points apiece.

Track Gets Started

Moran will begin its track and field season Thursday, Feb. 23 at the Breckenridge relay meet.

The Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs will compete in seven meets before the District 13-1A meet April 13 at May.

Senior Alli Scott returns, looking for a third trip to state after winning two medals last year. Scott claimed gold in the 100 hurdles and silver in the 300 hurdles. Her gold was the first for Moran since 1972.

Samantha Hinkle returns in the throwing events.

Moran coach John Hughes said the first meet that the boys will compete in will be Friday, March 3 at Trent.

The first junior high meet is scheduled Monday, Feb. 27 at Zephyr. The junior high schedule has four meets, finishing with district on March 31 at Cross Plains.

Fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students will compete in a youth track league starting in March. Hughes said the league will include several six-man schools such as Throckmorton and Brookesmith.
