Moran basketball to end Tuesday

The basketball season in Moran will end next Tuesday when the Bulldogs travel to Ranger for the final district match of the year.

The junior high teams played their last games this Monday, Feb. 10, and the high school girls finished their season in Strawn on Tuesday, Feb. 11.

Although the various high school and middle school teams posted more losses than wins on the basketball court this year, girls head coach and athletic director John Hughes regularly reminded Moran players and fans that “no matter what, it’s always a great day to be a Bulldog.”

Moran Varsity Boys

In the last couple of weeks the high school boys fell 54-13 to Gordon on Jan. 28, 65-18 to Baird on Feb. 4, and 75-20 to the Eula Pirates on Feb. 7.

“We did not play well against Baird,” said coach Robert Londerholm.

Scoring against the Bears were Jonas Sotelo 8 and Lyric Huskey 6.

“Against Eula we were down to just five players,” said the coach. “We were just trying to hold Eula to under 100 points.”

Eula, currently ranked 10th among Texas 1-A schools, came into the game undefeated in district, and has put over 70 points on the board in all but one of those match-ups.

Leading the Bulldog offense was Huskey with 16 points.

Moran hosted Ranger on Saturday, Feb. 8.

“Ranger was a close game,” said Londerholm. “We led most of the way, but turned the ball over and missed some free throws and put backs in the final minutes to lose 46 to 41.”

The Bulldogs traveled to Strawn on Tuesday, Feb. 11. Results were not available at press time and will be reported next week.

Moran varsity boys will host Gordon on Friday, Feb. 14, and then head to Ranger next Tuesday for the final game in round two of district play.

Lady Bulldogs

The varsity girls hosted their last home game of the year on Tuesday, Feb. 4, losing to Baird 42-14.

“It was a good game until after halftime,” said Hughes. “We came out strong to start the game, and went basket for basket against them.”

One bad quarter was too much to overcome.

“The third quarter killed us, as we couldn’t buy a basket,” said Hughes. “Other than that, we played well, and the girls fought hard, like always.”

Scorers were Reshaley Schafer 8, Johnnie Hise 5, and Dariann Hawley 1.

The Lady Bulldogs’ only senior, November Meredith, was recognized during the Ranger game.

The Eula Lady Pirates, currently ranked seventh among Texas 1-A teams, ran up the score against Moran on Friday, Feb. 7, posting a 90-7 win.

“This game was a wash from the start,” said Hughes. “The girls played hard, but we just couldn’t get anything going.”

Scoring for Moran was Hise with seven points.

Junior High Boys

The junior high Bulldogs lost 17-9 to the Strawn Greyhounds in Moran on Monday, Feb. 10.

“We played our hearts out, but came up short in the end,” said coach Matthew Hise. “I know I said the boys played their best game against Eula, but I believe this last game was even better.”

Scoring were Ellis Hise 4, A.J. Hebel 2, Caleb York 2, and Toby Eason 1.

“I am proud of these young men and the work and effort they put into this season,” Hise said.

Results from the junior high girls games with Eula and Strawn were not available at press time.
